man, what a great movie

i mean, it was kinda brainless fun but thats what one should expect from a Godzilla movie, right? the action was some of the best ive seen in a rubber-suit movie for a while, not at all boring. and the fact that the heroine manages to land in a swimming pool after ejecting from hundreds (thousands?) of feet in the air and survives only makes the movie that much better.

Yeah, good fun G flick.

Eh, it's not exactly terrible, but I'd definitely rank it the weakest of the Millennium era.

The plot isn't bad, the characters are boring but thankfully not annoying, Godzilla's design is cool beans. But it looks so... cheap. Granted, that's something normal to say about a kaiju film, but this looks cheaper and faker than your normal 00s-era kaiju. The building look fake, the movements are wobbly, particularly Megagiraus whose strings are near-visible. Not to mention the CGI on the other dragonflies is rather low-par.

I know I shouldn't expect much from a rubber-suit slugfest, heck I'm still a fan of kaiju films, but the lower-than-low production values are distracting here. But I liked the bloody sewer attack, and it's still better than Godzilla's Revenge and 'Son Of'. But just... cheap.

Godzilla body slamming Megaguirus is the best part! There are some good heat ray scenes in the movie as well.

The movie was a mixed bag. Megaguirus was a surprisingly effective opponent, but a giant insect is a bit of a weird choice. She was certainly more impressive that Battra though.

(Spoilers start here)

I thought the female lead was pretty cool too. And I liked the fake out at the end in the fight against Megaguirus where it looks like she's got him with her tail claw, but he's really caught it between his teeth. You can see it coming, but it's still a cool moment.

That said, I didn't like the way that they handled Godzilla in this film. He got beaten up way too much in this movie. He never once hit the blue Super-X clone, he got swarmed on by the Meganula for the longest time, it was all he could do to try and get some offense against Megaguirus, and he was twice blown up by a computer geek. I'm surprised that he could be simultaneously overpowered and repeatedly beaten up the way that he was in this film. The fact that they tried to pass him off as the 1954 Godzilla made it worse. He certainly wouldn't have been kicked around like that.

"The fact that they tried to pass him off as the 1954 Godzilla made it worse."

I don't think they are necessarily saying that it's the same godzilla.
They're just saying that he/they have always looked like the godzilla in this film.

They mentioned that Godzilla's first attack came in 1954, they used background footage from the original movie, and they even lifted the scene where he retreats. The only thing they omitted was him getting killed underwater at the end.

The movie really feels more like a sequel to Godzilla 2000 than the original film and I honestly think that's what it should have been. It was just a weird decision on their part.

i think the idea is that it doesn't really matter too much.

if you've seen the original film, then you'll think "this must be a new monster", but if you haven't seen the original, then you don't really need to know that the original one died.

i think they are trying to avoid confusing people who haven't seen the last 50 years worth of films.
all anybody needs to know is "holy ****! GOJIRA!!!!!"

Eh, I still don't think any of the flashbacks were necessary aside from the one where the woman's commanding officer got killed. If it doesn't matter which Godzilla it is, just start out with "Godzilla" killing her CO and be done with it. Make it a pre-title sequence, show the title, then begin with "Seven years later" or something to that effect.

There's no need to hit the reset button and make a giant flying bug the only opponent that Godzilla has ever face.

reply

i'm not disagreeing with you there.

still, i think the redone footage was quite cool, which is probably the reason why they did it anyway.

Yeah, the footage itself was pretty cool.
