So let me get this straight.... (Spoilers)

This film takes place in an alternate line of continuity in which the original Godzilla wasn't killed off by the Oxygen Destroyer, but rather was simply driven back as he was in the scene prior to his destruction? And that, by extension, the Godzilla seen in Godzilla 2000 was also the original Godzilla returned?

I thought that maybe he was Junior Godzilla grown to adulthood after the second one died in Godzilla versus Destroyah. I never thought that they would turn around and say, oh hey, that's the original one. He didn't die in this line of continuity. Craziness, sheer craziness.

It does make the film more interesting though.

Yes, in the Millenium series there is little continuity with the earlier movies or amongst themselves. Only Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Tokyo SOS have any continuity between them.

According to the prologue, Japan stopped using nuclear technology after the 1966 attack. In Godzilla 2000, Big G attacks a nuclear power plant. Therefore, these two films cannot be in the same timeline.

Thit and thpin!

If I remember correctly, The Millenium Series is essentially multiple timelines, so:

Godzilla 2000 Timeline
Gojira (1954)
Godzilla 2000

Godzilla vs. Megaguirus
Gojira (1954)
Godzilla vs. Megaguirus

GMK
Gojira (1054)
Godzilla, Mothra, & King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack

Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla
Gojira (1954)
Frankenstein vs. Baragon (presumably)
War of the Gargantuas
Mothra
Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla
Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.

Godzilla: Final Wars
Gojira (1954)
Godzilla: Final Wars
