The ending

I have to say I LOVE this movie. I think it has some of the best shots I have seen in a movie, some of them are absolutely stunning. I can't say how much emotion I felt at the end when she pulled out his necklace and realized he was alive and the music starting planning and the camera panned over the Jesus statue.

How did you like how the ending was done? Why do you think Hugo decided to show her that he was alive in a very secretive way?

I find that Jesus statue is a great ending, and one of the most cynical in whole movie history.

It is obvious that the authors want to show how Jesus is above all of us, keeps us, takes care... And so many terrible and tragic things happen under his spread arms.

Is this ending really a happy end in the way Jesus would do?

Hugo is alive. He was saved from the explosion. Is this dog of the war really a character that was worth saving? He spent several days helping the girl. Is it enough for redemption? And knowing who he was, who his only friends and coworkers were, how can we expect him to do anything else but return to them to be used in some other war(s)?

On the other hand, Anita decides to leave the police. We all know what how many people who work in police all over the world don't look very different from Hugo or Vondt. And even those rare who could change, moderate this standard and include care and compassion give up.

Jesus is high above us, on the mountain or in Heaven. Who is going to do his work down here - or will he only exist as a piece of stone?

This is a bitter happy end, with a professional war dog killer as a hero who earned his daily bread by killing children, and a girl who, even under (or just because of) his protection had to become a killer herself to find a place under the sun... and to keep the line, the chain of death.

Beautiful, symbolic and very, very cynical end.

The movie had a good ending for me as well. I figured the girl and her father took over the good part of the mom's business and inherited her money. As for the cop lady she may have gotten with the girls dad [she was not that naive] and they may/did hook up she would share in the wealth, Plus the girl needed a mom. As for Hugo I am sure they saw each other again in the future.
