I didn't know in spain they spoke spanish so well

and before you fire the stupid American comment, I am not American I am Colombian but in Colombia unfortunately after we gained independence from that country we literary learned very little about Spain afterwards..... minus christopher columbus and conquistadors stuff in history class at school.

I just watched this fantastic movie here in switzerland with french subtitles because I thought the language difference would be enough that I wouldn't understand what the movie was about but I understood everything!!!

I must admit I didn't know much about Spain..... but now I am intrigued... I live in Switzerland with my boyfriend who is Hungarian and we usually drive our little car around the world... last week we were in turkey and drove back home.

We're sort of gypsies!!! I am very interested in visiting the location where this movie was shot, any one knows?

It was shot in Formentera, one of the Balearic Islands, east of Spain. It's still quite virgin, not like Ibiza.

This has to be the most unintentionally funny thread title ever. The OP is Colombian and is very surprised that they speak Spanish so well in Spain! I've got news for the OP: in France they speak French very well, in England (my home country) they speak English very well, I even hear that in Germany they speak German well.

That may be true, but it is also true that in some parts of the world, people who also speak English have quite a difficult time understanding you. That is especially true of some regional accents. I don't know England well enough to list them, but, for example, but my wife, who is a unilingual English speaker, said that folks in Scottish pubs might as well been talking a different language for all that she could understand. I suspect it works both ways, although I have a hard time thinking that anyone would have trouble understanding me :)!

Also true, but I've heard that folks in other parts of the world who also speak French find enough differences that understanding becomes difficult...Quebec and Haiti come to mind.

I'd definitely confess to turning on closed captioning on more than one British show!

Good Lord, yes. Though I am British, I have lived in America more than half my life. When I watch British shows and movies, I almost always have to have subtitles switched on.

I think he meant the accents. For us latinos, Spain is known for having people pronouncing the "S" like a "SH" or a "TH". And they do that in this movie, but very little.

I much prefer watching the films of Spain to those from Spanish speaking America. I live in the US and hear American Spanish frequently, and it just doesn't sound as pleasant to me. So although I do find it a bit amusing that someone would be surprised the Spanish speak their language well, I do agree with the observation.

As far as people speaking English well in the UK, um...not always in the films I've seen. I have no problem with most films from the UK, but occasionally there will be one or two actors who are almost incomprehensible. I don't feel so bad about it not, reading that some people who live there have the same problem!
