Underrated?

I personally really liked this film for all of its humor and movie references. I really think it should it should be rated higher. Anyone else think so?

reply

Not that this is a bad movie... but I really dislike films that reference other films, or films about films for that matter. Its too intelectually cutesy... and not creative.

reply

you must really hate movies then, because most films reference other films.

I think so. I enjoyed every minute of it. Yeah, it is fluff, so what? It's also one of the stronger debut films you'll be lucky enough to see (and considering that the alternative is Austin Powers, Milker of Lame Double Entendres...>>shudder<<...I'd say this is your best option on the retro shelf)

I liked the movie too.. I saw it about 2 years ago for the first time and just a few days ago i got it from Amazon for only 4.95USD on dvd!

It's fun Fluff, rented it on a whim just cuz it reminded me of Barbarella

The best vf/x are the ones you don't notice

reply

Way underrated! Why have I not heard of this until my 19-year-old son rents it? Wonderful melange of styles and references. I laughed and was sad at the same time for the loss of the amazing energy of the pre-digital late '60s world of Franco-Italian filmmaking.

I do think it is under-rated b/c nobody has seen or heard of it for the most part. It is one of those movies that sets a mood, brings you to another place, like a virtual reality type thing. The camera work is very good and the special features on the dvd are cool.

Where has that earthy rawness gone! The new "polished pearls" have charm but there is something to be said for a film that seems to have been made through a dusty lens.

reply

Yeah, i like it. It's not as good as Sophia's films, but i like it more than their dad's stuff (Francis Ford Coppola is the most overrated filmmaker in the history of cinema).

"I want a mustache damn it! I want to look like Burt Reynolds!"

I think, like fellow music video director Mark Romanek, Roman is a much better director than he is a writer. I liked the film a lot, but wanted more. Romanek is only directing (not writing) his next film, hopefully Roman will do the same.

I just got through watching this video. I actually borrowed it from the library & was drawn to the sexy cover. I figured it was an actual 60's filmed movie, something similar to Barbarella (the copyright date was covered). I recognized the the names Gerard Depardieu, Billy Zane, & Jason Schwartzman, but figured Schwartzman was another actor not the Rushmore star. Very pleasantly surprised. Fun movie with interesting ending & cheesy special effects. I'll be recomending it to friends. I to am surprised I never heard about it for being a 2001 release. Has Angela Lindvall done anything else? Her bio on IDBM doesn't even mention this.

I liked a lot this movie, definetly underrated, but not true that F.Copolla is overrated. He is truly one of the best

reply

It was okay...I liked Jeremy Davies' performance.

I did find the extras on the DVD very interesting. Roman seems like an interesting guy. I think the Coppolas should collaborate a lot more. In fact, they should have their own TV show...maybe each week, a different family member could direct an episode. ;-)

reply

I myself cannot stand Jeremy Davies...but even that wasn't enough to keep me from just loving this film. I thought it was terrific, and hope Roman keeps it up.

I think it's safe to say that Roman has a fair way to go as a director before he matches his much more talented sister or the epic heights of his father's films (which don't need to be mentioned because his early work is mythic and powerful). CQ isn't a bad film, and with the clever and knowing set designs, costumes and lovely women it makes for pretty good barn musique. But the film suffers from a lack of determination and a droopy narrative of unrequited love and frusterated desires. It could be safely said that this is a film about a guy who is attempting to IMAGINE the 60's having never really lived through it. The narrative tension and conflict don't add up to much frankly.

Like you say it's not a bad film but it doesn't stimulate or leave any trace.
Whilst referenceing other films is often inherent this should either be done in a subtle way so as to make it invisible except to very literate filmgoers or when done blatently (as in this case) it must be done with skill to offer something more than the original. It is rather cheap to copy something without improving it or to give it new meaning (as in parodies which may almost duplicate the original but with a very different result).
The attempt to borrow that much from Le Mépris without adding anything but other film references was pretty dissapointing. Le Mépris (which I didn't really like but respect in it's context) was groundbreaking in it's era and has been referenced so often since, that this film really has no raison d'être unless it was a "pass-time" in view of preparing future productions and ideas, which the Coppolas can allow themselves.

Does anyone really need MORE Coppola self-indulgence? I actually liked this movie a lot, and love more than a few of the rest of the movies the family has put out, but EVERY SINGLE MOVIE turns into some sort of study or homage to themselves. If it isn't clear enough in the movies, just flip through the special features, or the cast and crew listings. While it's hard not to swing a dead cat and not hit a highly talented, if not sometimes overindulged, relative of the family, it becomes almost a caricature the extent that it seems they can self-reference or stroke themselves. There is even a rather long award winning documentary made by the family to highlight its achievement in making one of the longest movies in history.

Again this is not a critique of any of this family's body of work, a majority of which has deserved every bit of praise it has garnered. It is only a critique of how self-indulgent it really is. This whole film is an exercise in this favorite family hobby, and the special dvd features even more-so. Aside from just involving many of the family members directly, from Chris O'neil, to Schwartman, to Sofia, much of the movie is a reworking of favorite stories, and sayings, and philosophies of the famous patrons as seen from the adoring eyes of the child. Beyond just borrowing things from his father's museum of cinematic history, he surrounded himself with notable souvenirs and possessions and references of his father's as part of his working inspiration.

Well it's just a thought. Then again maybe I am just still annoyed at Scorcese finally being given the awards he has been waiting for, but for a movie that is a remake of a Hong Kong action thriller.

Don't say that! What? ...The 'zed word'! Don't say it! Why? It's ridiculous!

yeah, definitely. it is a great movie.

Of the Coppola brood I feel Sofia is the overated one. Roman is definitely the more creative one, check his music videos which are 3 minute films in themselves. Yes, I feel CQ is underrated.
