CHRISTIAN CLAVIER: silly?
Does anyone agree that, alltough a fine actor, Mr. Clavier looks a bit silly in his Napoleon outfit? He does not strike me as a ruler of millions in this movie.

shareWell, the real Napoleon looked like a dolt too...

Absolutely! See my post "Napoleon Confronts the Australians"
shareWhat have looks got to do with it? Napoleon was very short and stout. Christian Clavier was brilliant as Napoleon!
shareActually i thought clavier looked less silly than Bonaparte....
shareNapoleon being short? Now that's not true at all. This was English propaganda at the time. Actually he was quite tall compared to contemporaries. Only in British caricatures he was standardly depicted as being small.
And, Napoleon looking like a dolt? Although the posted painting is quite confincing to me, contemporaries described him as handsom. At least in his younger years. At least he must have been charismatic enough to get armies marching along with him...
Napoleon was actually over 5'7"tall, which was tall for a man of that time. I have seen lists of English transportees to Australia in the 1820s and most of the men were less than 5'4" tall. An English cartoonist who had never seen him started the trend for drawing him as short for propaganda purposes.
He was 2 inches taller than Horatio Nelson.
This film, although very good, was a little spoilt for me as I thought Christian Clavier looked like a cross between Peter Sellers and Dustin Hoffman and spoke like Inspector Clouseau!
shareThis was by far the best, most detailed version of the life of Napoleon, at least the best that I've seen. Clavier was excellent, as was the entire cast especially Malkovich and Anouk Aimee. She is as beautiful as ever. Also, the special features of the dvd version had a wonderful documentary with Peter Graves narrating. I didn't realize there were sooooo many paintings of Napoleon.
