What the hell is this and who are all these Turks voting for it??

Are there really enough Turks giving this a 10 who are regular voters to get this to 123 on the top 250?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

reply

seriously! i was wondering that myself. i am seriously amazed that an ultra obscure movie not available anywhere in anglo country (inc netflix or anything like that) jumped from 250-->123 in a week! at this rate, it will be in the top ten in a few months.

where the hell can i find this movie to rent!? its even available on ebay! and no store seems to have it with english subtitles!!!

reply

how is that possible?

stinks like a scam!

I'd not bother worrying about trying to see Tosun Pasa. I'm American, and when Hababam Sinifi got into the top 250 a few months ago the same questions all popped up. I was told: This is a movie loved in Turkey and is regularly broadcast on Turkish TV. If you are not completely familiar with the intricacies of Turkish language and culture you'll have no idea what's going on, or why it's funny, or why anyone would ever rate it a 10. English or French subtitles will do it no justice. Tosun Pasa will continue to climb up the charts until IMDB figures out how to weigh the rating properly. It's a very unique situation.

hmmm and what is exactly the reason,
to appear on 123 from one day to another?????

there had to be about 1000 10-votes during one night or something...

there is a very, very busy fan-club out there.......

why do you guys care if its in the top 250? if its there where it is, it has its reason, people like people dont, dont care if you dont have any idea at all of this movie...

Yeah, I think profpain11 explained the situation clearly. As a Turkish man, I approve the truth of his explanation :).

We Turkish people are obsessed with comedies like "Hababam Sinifi" or "Tosun Pasha". Think of an American boy obsessed with Star Wars universe and who gives both six movies of Star Wars a 10/10 rating. It's a bit similar to this obsession (while the movies has no relation what-so-ever).

I would also like to add that this has no political reasons - "Hababam Sinifi" movies or the "Tosun Pasha" movie don't involve specifically international politics. This has domestic reasons. Most Turkish people symphatize with actors of "Hababam Sinifi" ("Sinif" means "class-room" in this use) as if they are literally their class-mates !

hey, it's absolutely alright,
that you turks love a movie and vote accordingly 10,
but the strange thing is still,
why there hadn't been a constant moving up,
but a sudden appearance on No. 123 ...?!?!?!?

Without knowing exactly, It think the reason may be that the Imdb needs some "minimum number of votes" to place a movie on the Top 250. So, when this number of votes was reached, it suddenly appeared on No. 123.

Now, I've seen that a new Drama movie called "Babam ve Oglum" which has became famous around here sometime ago is also on top 250 (#119 to be specific). These are not bad movies but I think Turkish people here does not vote them with a critical approach (as would movie critics do).

Yeah, it's ridiculous. I think Two rating options are enough for most Turkish people around here on Imdb: 1/10 (Awful) or 10/10 (Incredible). Binary logic is dominant among Turkish movie-goers, and thanks Mr. George Boole for providing the theory. LoL !!!

hmmm, yes, the first two sentences of your answer make sense
as a logical explanation.

that really could be the reason, thanx!

Hey, hey. Don't get so heated all of a sudden.

I think they didn't do an "exception"al rule just for Turkish movies. I think they've increased minimum the number of votes needed (for all movies, that is). That's why they're not in the top list.

Of course Turkish movies on top list may be the reason for this, but hey, before crying out "unfair!", think about this: Do we vote Turkish movies fairly (relative to foreign films)? Most Turks here just gives 10/10 vote for nearly all Turkish movies and I think this is not logical/fair. Maybe once we become reasonable, they may also become reasonable and leave some of these movies on the top list.

Well, if you don't like IMDB and how IMDB sets up ways of interaction, rules and reactions upon acts of manipulation come up with a better internet movie site and people will flock over to your place in the long run. If you want something more international (speak: turkish) set up a more international (speak: turkish only) movie website. The world outside Turkey doesn't really care either way. Right now the names of all those internationally acclaimed, award winning turkish movies escaped me, my fault.

i have watched a great number of comedy movies and i can honestly say, this movie deserves its rating. it is funny really, absolutely funny. however this movie is not universal as Monty Phyton movies. there are a lot of jokes that has cultural references. and moreover a lot of jokes are impossible to translate. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ibzps4mqzGY from 5.50 to 7.20, i find this dialogue one of funniest scenes in a movie but it is literally impossible to translate without cutting off at least 80 percent of its homor. translater must be bilingual language expert.

i have watched some "very funny" Russian and Hungarian comedy films, and i couldnt find them that funny. so, i think a non-Turkish shouldnt watch this movie with great expectations. i believe every nation has some beautiful movies of their own and this is one of Turks'.

in "sacred sperm" song of Phytons, we all world inhabitants find something in common. or in dialogs of George and Jerry. do not think of this movie' rating as Turks' poll wrecking. if hangover has 8.0 rating with 80k votes, this movie's rating can be more than 10. however as i said before, this movie is for Turks and Turkish speakers.

but if you find (how good?!) subtitles, watch this movie just for a different taste.
