Love it...

A great film, very depressing at times but a good depiction of life in the London suburbs... Lee Evans really proves he can go from stand-up comedy to hard hitting drama... Loved the cameo by Ray Winstone as well!!!!

I don't think it painted a good picture of working class Britain to be honest. This family are supposed to be rough and ready when they didn't seem that at all... But then perhaps council estates in London are better cared for than those in North Wales. I didn't find it tragic, the family weren't scruffy enough and it wasn't hugely effective.

how rough & ready do you want them to be??

'I didn't find it tragic, the family weren't scruffy enough...'?? so you only have sympathy for people if they are scruffy. what is this obsession of yours regarding scruffiness? how downtrodden do people have to be for you?

working class? yes. but you can't generalise not all working class familes are the same. dsyfunctional? yes in so much as they were not a 'typical' family & had some issues to deal with... but then show me a family without flaws...

"A great film", you should get out more often! "Lawrence of Arabia" is a Great film. "The Martins" is an ordinary film which wastes the talents of Lee Evans and Kathy Burke. If it was a comedy, it wasn't funny and if it was a drama it was too outlandish to be taken seriously. To really enjoy a film I feel you need to either identify with (heaven forbid) or sympathise with (hanging's too good....) the characters. Which did you do?

Hey Chasing Phantom...who cares. It's just a technicality. Yes Hatfield is in Hertfordshire, but it's a generalisation. It could have been set in Ilford. Not in London, but same difference.

Lee Evans - completely miss cast in this movie, and I say that with a heavy regret because I think he is an awesome person and a brilliant comedian.

reply to egham1...

this film isn't meant to typify a certain genre comedy/drama etc its pretty obvious its intent was to show a family struggling just to get by. not exactly a typical family but a family all the same - warts & all...

btw don't use your knowledge or interest in films to put down someones elses choice. each to their own...don't be so dogmatic.

crabarse= it wasn't set in london suburbs though. Hatfield is just a town

I got to University of Hertfordshire which is in Hatfield, and for sort of a local i found it funny as hell, due to people who are associated from around there (Pikey's).

It just depends where you are from basically that depends on your humour to such movies as 'The Martins'.

oh AND YESH I WORK IN THE GALLERIA! lol
