Also, Rick says something along the lines of "Of all the bars in all the ski resorts on all the mountains, she had to come walking into mine..."

...or something. Isn't that a Casablanca reference as well?

There was also the whole "play it again" sequence done almost exactly like Casablanca with Weezer's "Island In The Sun".

reply

haha. We watched Casablanca recently in English. I tried to persuade my teacher to let us watch this too.

...It didn't work

the part where the girl is like "play the song again, for old time's sake" and the buddy is reluctant, but plays it anyway and then rick comes out and he says "i told you never to play that song again!"

the whole basic story of the movie is taken from casablanca, so much so that it's kind of ridiculous now that i realize that. i didn't notice it until i watched casablanca in my "film and american society" class how much they take from it....kinda odd, but it worked i suppose.

Funny...I just turned on Comedy Central to see the movie on and within three seconds I was on here to see if there was supposed to be a Casablanca connection or if I had gone crazy. I guess this answers my qustion then.

actually nothing was hidden, This movie was completely based on Casablanca. It was just rewritten with snowbards and raunchy humor.

This movie was funny.

The ENTIRE film is NOT based on Casablanca. The entire love story between rick and anna is based on Casablanca. Many films have parallels and pay tribute to other films by incorporating elements of the old into the new. However I was amazed just how much of Casablanca does show up in this one. The first time I saw it I thought I was going crazy.

Also at the end, Stumpy yells to rick, "I am your father!", a star wars reference. There is also a Gladiator reference at the end when Jenny and the kids are throwing snowballs. She tells them, "At my signal, unleash hell." I am sure there are many other references like these all throughout the film.

I just watched Casablanca for the first time and I kept seeing parallels between it and Out Cold. I think it's incredibly funny that such a low brow movie such as Out Cold (wich I love, by the way) would draw so much from such a classic as Casablanca. I'm glad someone else noticed it, though.

Do you want to know something even more odd? It took me 5 years to understand this film... and now I just feel stupid.

But here's how the movie goes:

Under the pretenses of the narrative, Bull Mountain isn't really a literal location. Bull Mountain serves as a metaphor for the snowboarding culture. The town's motto is living freely and expressing yourself, which is pretty much the motto of snowboarding back in the 80s and 90s. The attraction to snowboarding was the free form, free style that was inherent in the sport; however, the biggest threat to the expressionism in snowboarding is advertisements and corporate involvement. The sport is all about freedom and yet corporations seize that freedom and style and use it for monetary gain, just like how in the movie Bull Mountain is being bought-out by Major's Resorts. So, similar to corporate involvement in snowboarding, you have the corporate involvement in a small town ski resort. The message of the film, which is really the message for snowboarding, is "don't go changing." Now what is the most ironic thing you can do with that message? How about paralleling the narrative with a classic film, like Casablanca. The film's message is "don't go changing" and yet they take elements of Casablanca and change it for this film. Whether it was for satirical purposes or not, I don't know.

reply

It's not ironic at all for them to draw parallels with Casablanca. The message of the film is indeed "don't go changing" but it is not just referring to snowboardering but also film. Casablanca is a classic film and the writers of Out Cold want movies to stay like that, so therefor they base their own around it. By doing this they are saying let's keep movies the way they are supposed to be, like Casablanca, and not change them.

Now this could be a bit contorversial, but i purpose that casablanca was in fact based on out cold, not the other way around. Just ponder this for a moment, that is all i ask.

I agree with that, Snake_Eyes. Thanks!

According to IMDb: The love story between Rick and Anna and Barry follows the same path as the love story of Casablanca's Rick and Isla and Victor. Rick and Anna met, fell in love, she was gone without reason. She finds her way into Rick's bar hangout and sees Rick's best friend and has him play Rick and her song. Rick hears the song and gets angry. Then there is the fact she also has another man in her life, Barry. Rick is determined to get her back but then sees her life will be better with Barry and does the noble thing and makes her go with Barry. There are several variations on direct quoting from Casablanca also, ie: "We'll always have Pedro el Horny's..." etcetera. Plus the 'occupation' of the Snownook people draws parallels with the Nazi occupation.

I wish I could think of something witty to put here... but I can't.
