'only thing worse than a dragon are americans'

Kinda harsh!!! how bout "only thing worse that a dragon are koreans" with jim jot dum ( Kim Jong-un ) hanging out of the tank. quinn and the rest would have *beep* themselves seeing that come over the hill.

reply

Eh I laughed at it. It was written before 9/11 I hope. Denton van Zan took a well deserved shot at them later on, if you remember.

They have an anti American holiday in england

reply

Not really what i meant. Im guessing you all assumed i was american. Im not im british and to my knowledge we do not have a "anti American holiday" here in England, if they do nobody told me. All i meant was that it was kinda harsh saying that, im assuming that he said that because america would have fired all its nuclear weapons at the dragons but doing more harm to its people and damage to its environment but then every single nation (that have nuclear weapons) would have done that..So just think its kinda harsh saying "only thing worse than a dragon are americans"

Same day, Independence Day and Colonial Insurrection Day.

reply

no we dont!

The comment was justified by the rest of the film. As usual Hollywood writes the American protagonists as people who can roll into any country they please like they run the show with insufferable arrogance and do whatever they like, and better than those silly foreigners too. It's a narrative that seem to play out a lot in American cinema, especially when Brits are involved. It seems to stem from the prestigious military history that Americans have convinced themselves they have.

reply

You mean the military that saved your ass and prevented you from growing up speaking German? Are you talking about that military?

reply

No, he's not talking about the Soviets.

reply

I found the comment a little over-the-top, contributing to the annoying silliness that unfortunately lurks throughout the film. He might have said 'soldiers', given his obvious disdain for the military forces that contributed to the destruction of his world, and his even-more obvious paranoia of the arrival of a new Alpha Male that may challenge his leadership.

reply

Ha! Nice.

May thy blade chip and shatter...

reply

You're an idiot. Showing up towards the end of the war doesn't mean you won it for everyone.

Prof. Farnsworth: Oh. A lesson in not changing history from Mr. I'm-My-Own-Grandpa!

reply

Not just at the end but after the whole conflict began to turn in favour of the allies. US direct involvement in the war served to shorten the war and they only finally got involved after being forced into it by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour.

reply

Exactly. They like to claim they stepped in to save everyone, but it was basically the same thing they do now. Someone gave them a black eye, so they went out looking for revenge.

WWI they kind of did step in and save everyone. WWII even if they were just getting even, they still saved everyone in the process. Just saying. Plus I wouldn't compare either of those wars to anything now. WWI & II were two of very few conflicts where there were pretty clear sides of "good" and "evil". There is a lot of grey area that transpired (and I'm not saying there weren't atrocities) but the overall picture was pretty "black and white."

If not for the Americans millions more would've died in the Pacific theater. It most certainly was not "just" an American victory it took America, GB, Russia, etc... to finally gain victory over the AOE, but don't short change what America did. The war was (for all practical purposes) over when Japan fell and Japan fell because of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve. - Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto

To have the United States at our side was to me the greatest joy. Now at this very moment I knew the United States was in the war, up to the neck and in to the death. So we had won after all!...Hitler's fate was sealed. Mussolini's fate was sealed. As for the Japanese, they would be ground to powder. - Prime Minister Winston Churchill

No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory. - President Franklin Delano Roosevelt

I think you mean "If not for the Canadians."

Excuse me? You mean like you American's constantly do? Like above where you imply that America saved millions of lives by entering the war? Lives you cannot possibly account for, unless you have some weird ability to see alternate timelines.

How was this shown in the film?

The film quite clearly shows a Brit, Quinn, saving the world by killing the male dragon. The only American involved was his love interest, Alex.

People are taking this joke in the film way too seriously.

reply

What's the saying "none speak with more authority and conviction than those completely ignorant of the facts." Anyone with knowledge of history knows the entry of the US into the war shortened it by many years. Do you really see Britain and the free French launching an invasion on D-Day by themselves? They would have been thrown back into the sea like they were at Dunkirk. Someone mentioned the Soviets winning the war. They may have been able to eventually but why would they stop at the English channel? So without the US entry the English would be speaking either German or Russian.
The English hate Americans because we tweaked their king's nose, whipped their ass in two wars and save their ass in WWII.
Take the truth with a stiff upper lip, what, what?

reply

Oh, yeah. The 'brilliant' Englishmen with the nerve to speak lowly of Americans, the same ones who had no plan in place to ever beat the dragons. They were probably a month away (being generous) from starving to death, waiting on a crop to harvest, that the dragons knew exactly when to burn it to dust at just the right time.

They were doing NOTHING to combat the dragons, but instead sat in their castle, praying and waiting to die. It took the Americans showing up to save their butts.

When we're thinking about our own brain, would that be a mental paradox??

reply

he's got a point there.

reply

Shortly after that scene, Creedy mentions some incident with "rogue Marines" taking over half the world. I'd imagine his hatred of Americans may have had something to do with that, but who knows. It was a funny line imo. People shouldn't take it so serious in a dragon movie.

reply

Haha! Hilarious line that evidently infuriates the so-called anti-PC crowd. And judging by recent events, that line is more justified than ever (people in America have put the world at risk like never before).

reply

Thats a funny way to spell chinese.

reply

I mean, Theres only two limitless things in life, Universe and american stupidity and im not so sure about the former.

reply

The correct quote, from Albert Einstein, is, “There are two things in Creation that are infinite: the universe, and human stupidity.” He said that after we dropped the first atomic bomb in war.

Do you notice how his statement is more precise than yours? Actually, I don’t care if you do or not. I care about what those who read this in the future care.

reply

I know the correc quote, i was rephrasing. Actually my statement is more precise because it gives a qualifier to the stupidity.
