Quote near the end?

I saw Nicholas Nickleby some time ago on PBS. (I think this is the adaption they showed...) Anyway, at the party at the end the theater head gave a speech that had a great quote about family being the people you choose to spend time with. Does anyone happen to have the full quote?

reply

It's one of my favorite quotes but I don't think it was from this version. I believe the quote was from the 2002 movie version, from the final wedding scene:

"In every life, no matter how full or empty one's purse, there is tragedy. It is the one promise life always fulfills. Thus, happiness is a gift, and the trick is not to expect it, but to delight in it when it comes, and to add to other people's store of it. What happens if, too early, we loose a parent? That party on whom rely for only....everything. What did these people do when their families shrank? They cried their tears. But then they did the vital thing, they built a new family, person by person. They came to see that family need not be defined merely as those with whom they share blood, but as those for whom they would give their blood. It is in that spirit that we offer this heartfelt toast, to the brides and grooms!"

I haven't read the book but can someone tell me if this was taken from the book or written by the scriptwriter for the movie?

reply

Wow, I didn't expect an answer after all this time! Thank you very much.

I don't think the speech was in the book. The full text is on Project Gutenberg, and I don't see anything resembling it. It's surprising that it was written just for the adaption, since it's a seriously great speech.

I recently saw the 2002 film and was so moved by that speech that I went hunting for the same thing you did. The screenwriter really did a great job of capturing the soul of the story.
