A Q on Hababam Sinifi

Just wonderin' if this movie would appeal to someone who has no idea about Turkish culture or Turkish anything. It just seems odd that i've never heard of it yet it is considered so good. So, could someone explain the movie a little to me, it seems interesting.

I tried to answer your question on the "is this a joke?" thread. I hope that helps. Let me give you an idea though. One of the main characters keeps cursing "son of a donkey" in the movie. It cracks up every Turk I know. The way he says it is just so inexplicably funny, but if you're not a native speaker of Turkish, it will not mean anyhing to you. The star power and the ever popular soundtrack song will be meaningless, too. These are a few examples, so if you ever get to watch it, don't set your expectations very high. You could say this movie is like an insider joke. If you aren't familiar with Turkish culture, it should be just an average movie. I guess it is closest to the Police Academy, with more realism, better talents and more heart. If you are a cinephile, there are tons of better Turkish movies to see. I'm saying this although I LOVE the movie, but then again I'm Turkish.

The plot: the story of a class of students in a boarded high school for boys throughout a year. The administration puts all trouble-makers in one class in an effort to isolate them. They drive the administration and the teachers crazy with their pranks and antics. Yeah, exactly, no real story line. It's just like that.

Even if you are not a Turk, you will be able to understand the jokes because I believe you were a student once in your life. The story is about a class full of lazy and joker high school students. This movie makes you laugh a lot but there is something more important than that; the messages about friendship and love. Try to get the DVD, you won't be dissappointed.

I think that you should rent it first because there is a very high chance that you won't get most of it.

This post is very well written and actually manages to explain why we Turks love it and why others might find it boring and stupid and crappy.

It's a nice name, Todd Gack. What is that, Dutch?

No, this movie [or the whole series] would not appeal to someone who doesn't know anything about turkey or its' culture, history etc.

imagine you were born and raised in an obscure place [say, cambodia for example, or namibia], didn't know that the usa even existed and watched "family guy" or "south park"

of course you wouldn't enjoy it

It is about the lives of Turkish students who aren't very good with lessons. It has things about Turkish education system and culture but since non Americans can learn American culture from movies I think any non Turkish can learn it by watching this movie.I must warn you that you might not like this movie if you arent familiar with Turkish people.
