Seeing it in the UK?

Does anybody know if this film will be getting a UK dvd release any time soon? Or if it will be shown on UK TV?

reply

Get a cheap DVD player from Asda and buy it from the US on ebay!

i agree. i'll be very surprised if this is ever shown on UK telly. the same with 'Escape from Soibobor', strong cast (Alan Arkin & Rutger Hauer) but not shown for unknown reasons.
i think there are several reasons for its refusal of a UK release, but i won't divulg my 'mad wild-brained' theories here. anyway, who cares? by a multi region dvd from tescos and go on ebay and buy one from Holland or the Netherlands.

Maybe you're not old enough to remember avalonflyer, but Escape from Sobibor was shown on th TV years ago.

really?
i'm 27. i know it was made in '87? '88?
i'm just curious at what channel would carry it and at what time they would put it on.
i can't believe that it was shown prior to Labour coming into power, under Tory rule the BBFC hacked anything 'shocking' to pieces. remember when Robocop first aired on ITV? i rest my case.

but seriously, you think they'll ever show Sobibor again on UK tv?

reply

"Escape From Sobibor" was shown in the UK on a Sunday night in April 1987 - I'm not sure of the exact date, but I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to find out. I was 8 years old and I watched it quite accidentally. I guess it made a big impression - I can still remember many of the scenes. I can't remember which channel it was on, but it must have been ITV or C4 as I'm pretty sure there were advert breaks.

Take care.

Escape from Sobibor was shown on ITV3 (or was it ITV2 or ITV4) in 2005, because i remember watching it again in my first year at uni. I've just seen the Grey Zone, i ordered it from the German Amazon, the postage is only about £3 something so you may as well order it from there! I remember seeing Escape from Sobibor at school when I was in year 8... (12 years old ish), and it completely scared us *beep* but i guess that is to blame for my intense interest in anything to do with the second world war. :)

As for the Grey Zone, it was better than I thought it would be, very interesting to see a representation of the Sonderkommandos, something which is rarely touched upon in commercial american films. Not sure about Harvey Kietels dodgy German accent... sounded more French to me! It always bugs me when American actors play other nationalities, i think it would have been better to have Hungarian actors speaking english... hmmm. I would direct everyone to see the film Fateless, its an independant Hungarian film with english subtitles and for me it was twice as intense than the Grey Zone.
I watch these war films yet it makes me incredibly sad so I'm not sure why i watch them. I guess by us watching films about the nazi holocaust it keeps reminding people that these camps were only liberated 61 years go.

Lest we forget.
