I think it would have been significantly better if the end...

The general consensus seems to be that the movie ended perfectly. I disagree most strongly.

I think the perfect ending would be if it cut to credits as he's falling out of the window. Through the movie the only thing he's ever been afraid of or show the least bit of trepidation about has been falling. The daughter managed to get him to "jump" off the high dive now he's "jumping" again only this time fatally.

The last scene showing that he'll never mend his ways. And that he is now in a serious relationship with the skank who somehow made it into a decent college. Completely ruined the message of the movie/"The Movie" for me.

The idea that he would get promoted is repugnant to me. The idea that military intelligence would screw up that badly is beyond ludicrous.

The "wrap up" scene was unnecessary.

you would be surprised how bad and how often the military screws things up and loses paperwork

Military and Intelligence should never be used in the same sentence.
It' s an oxymoron.

I liked the irony of how in the beginning of the movie they covered up the accidental death of the guy playing football in the barracks by chucking him out of the window and saying he fell of the roof repairing an antenna...

The Elwood is about to get chucked off a roof at the end...

some of us call it foreshadowing. Also Elwood was a clerk so he was in a position to alter paperwork as he saw fit. He could easily write up new documents to account for the missing supplies. The man was by no means stupid. He had no idea that his new top was investigating him, Elwood just thought he really hated him because he was tapping his daughter.

and throw him out the window.
