I thought they were supposed to be the patients that Dr. Satan had experimented on. But I didn't remember if they said how long ago Dr. Satan was supposed to have done that, so maybe the timing isn't right. Maybe they were people the Firefly's sent to Dr. Satan that he abused/experimented on.
