bogart number 1?

wow...thats a bit high. I would've put him a bit lower down and Henry Fonda number one but oh well. I agree more with the women's list

totally. i agree with the women's list because the actress list was more for acting and performance, where as the men's list was more about movie stardom. I mean, come on! fred astaire all the way up at #5 while brando was only #4 and olivier was #14?

While IMO Brando should have been number one on the men's list I will defend Astaire being so high. The man absolutely embodies song and dance on film. He was and always will be the greatest American dancer ever to work on film. He redefined how movie musicals were made and has made a lasting impact on film and dance forever. So yeah, number five seems just right.

Oh, come on, Bogart always got the short stick... really, only three Oscar nominations, and one win (which most people adamently insis he didn't deserve)? He wasn't Brando, but its unbelievable that such a body of work went so unacknowledged by the Academy. He earned that # 1 spot.

I had a hard time figuring his #1 status out at first, but I guess alot of people related to his underdog status that resulted in his getting voted so high. He didn't fit the Clark Gable/Cary Grant mold, but he was successful... I think alot of people related to that. That, his unfortunate and untimely death, his chemistry with Lauren Bacall, Casablanca's legendary status as a film classic, and, yeah, his outstanding acting abilities were factors.

Bogart became "the movie guy" for a lot of hardcore film buffs back in the 1960's and since then that group (which has become the AFI crowd) has pretty much kept him in that spot for themselves however in terms of actual importance to motion pictures and popularity with the general public I would barely place him in the top ten. Certainly Charlie Chaplin, Clark Gable, Marlon Brando, Fred Astaire, James Dean, and James Stewart had far more impact on the film industry, were far more popular during their careers and are far more popular today with the general public.
