Possibly the silliest coincidence..

in a movie so loaded with coincidences that it's in danger of collapsing under its own weight like a soggy water laden tunnel, is when they happen upon the film set of Robert Siodmak's Escape From East Berlin (aka, Tunnel 28, a movie that actually chronicles their experiences after the fact. I am sure it was intended as a nod, but feels more like a bizarre time warp. I did like the acting in The Tunnel, but still prefer Siodmak's version. For all it's flaws and inaccuracies, it's a tighter, more suspenseful and better constructed film.

There were many, many tunnels. The film crew were shooting a feature film on the story of an actual attempt prior to this attempt. In other words, Slodmak's film was not about THIS tunnel. Sure saved Slodmak a bunch of production costs, huh? If the $15,000 a person in 1962 was the actual price, it was still not a lot of money for Slodmak.

Ignorant mobs don't get to win.
