now entering the French sector? (spoilers)

The tunnelers made a sign marking the border between French-occupied West Berlin and East Berlin. Matthis the engineer and the rest of them would have known exactly where this was, but they could have placed that sign anywhere arbitrarily. Why did Colonel Kroger trust the accuracy of the sign? The tunnel, I presume, was illegal in both West Berlin and East Germany.

I wonder, what was the East German protocol for retrieving illegal emmigrants from cross-border tunnels? How could anyone but Matthis really know where the Berlin Wall was?

And another question about borders... were they in the French or American sector of West Berlin? During the shooting of Heiner, they appeared to be in the American sector because there was an MP shouting in an American accent to Harry to get the F off the wall. However, at the end of the film, the sign in the tunnel indicates that the abandoned warehouse was in the French sector.

I realize this is a minor point but inconsistencies are annoying. Unless, of course, they are merely misunderstandings on my part that can be explained by IMDB users :)
