tsui harks worst film ever

Almost nothing but the action sequences work here. Bad acting, bad horrible editing, bad special effects, bad plot and what? story. It's embarrassing effort at best.

And if only the action works in a film that is not even an action film but just a thriller, that's very sad.

I would have to disagree with you guys. I in fact really enjoyed this movie. It was funny, smart, and very stylish. The action squences were so amazing that they made my jaw drop. I saw it when it came on cable TV, and went out the next day and bought the DVD. Cheers to Tsui Hark for making a great action movie that I will watch over and over for years to come.

reply

You are right. "T&T" is one of his best in years. The "Zu"-Remake was terrible and do not mention "Black Mask II". In "Time and Tiede" the master of motion is back. It is cool, fast, has great action and some superb moments. O.K. it ist stupid. So what? I saw it in cinema and was blown away. Still the best action movie in this century, I think.

reply

Oh c'mon, Time and Tide is not that bad but admittedly it's still light years from his Legend Of Zu which is arguably his greatest film of his career. I dare to say that it's the best film ever made. Black Mask 2 is at least the film John Woo could have only dreamed to make. Honestly i was more blown away by BM 2 than Time & Tide for certain.

By the way, anyone who claims Zu remake is terrible will hardly gain any credibility. It's widely regarded as one of his very best major films, ladies and gentlemen. And exactly the same grand landmark film for the industry like was OUTIC years ago.

Very well put. TaT and LOZ are true cult films not intended for the the average moviegoer.

sonic, don't you know how well received was the original Zu film?

Thanks. I didn't see many of his films yet but thanks anyway. However, from what i've seen i figured out immediately that he's definitely not doing films for the popular crowd like others. That's for sure. Personally what i liked about Time and Tide and Legend Of Zu the most, that almost every little detail there happened to have some kind of a purpose or profound meaning that would require the viewer's insightful interpretation for the film.

reply

Dear Mr.LtBauer8, like many great filmmakers with personal vision Tsui Hark NEVER put in his films anything that would have no meaning or was there just for the hollow entertainment, NEVER! It would be nothing but a waste of celluloid for him. I assume most of those details you're speaking of are informative as usual that enable Hark to say something to the audience. If you're interested, try to learn something more about this master filmmaker. Beside the Chinese cultural history and personal philosophies he's also "teaching" his audience through his cinematic language the basic Eastern religious beliefs and ideologies, especially Confucianism and Taoism, that he's reportedly explored to the fullest in his last Zu film, in fact to the point that most of the audience were confused by it. Therefore you have these subtle but real spiritual connections between the cinematic medium and the viewer. In reality, most of his movies are based on these teachings, even Time And Tide. That's what critics won't tell you, make your own study. His heroic Jiang Hu spirit and righteous way of life is remarkable and inspirational for many generations of filmmakers and filmgoers alike.

I will. I guess you convinced me. Is there anything in particular that you would recommend?

Thanks again, even though i have seen probably only three of four of his films i guess i am tempted to learn more about his personality as an artist because from what i have seen i can not describe as nothing but true examples of a genius at work. Did you see Black Mask 2? It's a truly incredible i n c r e d i b l e piece of an artistic achievement that for a second i started even doubting that it's directed by the human being or if i'm even living on earth. My mind was totally crashed and blown away, literally. It's one of the most brilliant movies of, ow *beep* that, there are even no movies like that. At least not on this *beep* planet.

Funny thing is that i’m not even a typical fan of Tsui Hark’s. I’m the fan, or say much more interested in the morals and ideologies of wuxia pian and Eastern religions that i’m studying for many years, which happened to be all paradoxically inter-connected to Tsui Hark actually, because he’s almost the same kind of a personality like me. What i see in his works is what i see in my own life, so to speak. So subsequently this way i began to be more fascinated by his accomplishments and more and more aware that he might be probably the happiest man in the world because of his experiences and mistakes that constantly serve him only as edifying lessons in life and his continual change he’s going through everyday. This lifestyle is in fact closely related to the Eastern religions, especially Zen Buddhism and Confucianism, that by letting things go and being open to new challenges the life can bring to him, he’s all along getting much closer to the recognition of who he really is. I realized that in certain phases of life the integrity is not what i’m actually looking for.

Tsui Hark has already quite a few insightful books but the one that i would gladly recommend to you is based on the Chinese students' researches into Tsui Hark's art, which is called "Swordsman and his Jiang Hu: Tsui Hark and HK Cinema". It's very informative (although written mostly in cantonese) but also very expensive. It might be out of print by now. But it's worth it because you'll learn quite a lot from this, you'll learn that nearly every single film of his was groundbreaking to some degree for the industry. When we already started talking about 01 Legend of zu; according to the people from HK industry this film was possibly the most groundbreaking of Tsui's long career, reportedly it's also one of his the most accomplished works to date, because this time the special effects were not only contributional for the industry but in fact transcended even the Hollywood standard at the time. They're quite nicely analyzing this subject in depth. Well, it's not so much hard to believe when you look at this work of art, is it.

Nice discussion you have there guys. I've also discovered this amazing book you've noted up there. There's actually a big section in it dedicated to the the groundbreaking production of Legend Of Zu. I think it was Sharon Hui who confirmed that Time and Tide was basically just a transfer for the new direction in Tsui Hark's career that Legend Of Zu virtually initiated. Today this film is seen as sort of a milestone for the Hong Kong industry.

reply

I wouldn’t say the worst ever but definitely among his worse films for sure. Thankfully he gave us Legend Of Zu a year later so we can forgive him once again.

WTF? You slam Time & Tide and then claim that LOZ is a better movie? There goes your credibility right there. LOZ is an extremely incompitent peice of crap that doesn't even qualify to be called a movie, let alone even be compared to something of actual quality like Time & Tide. T&T is atleast 5x the movie LOZ wishes it were.

No, Black Mask 2 was absolutely awful, a w f u l. Anyone who praises such a piece of junk is either truly blind or just another Tsui Hark poser-fanboy who praises and worships every piece of sh!t he pumps out no matter how terrible it is. Black Mask 2 is an insult to the original and I truly mean that.
