Ending- confused. (spoilers)

Ok, so the whole bank robbery was simply a thought that went through Alec's head during his final moments alive, right ? Where did the fantasy begin ? Just the robbery ? Was everything about the deceased son, quitting his job, refugees and auditions real?
Thanks!

Yes, I think everything that happened was just in his imagination as he was about to die. It's possible that a few things really did happen (like quitting his job) and he was remembering them, but it's hard to say for sure.
Interesting movie--I loved the surprise ending!

Whats up from cali.. I loved this movie but the ending confused the hell out of me... The island girl? the two ending up in mexico i guess.. When did the dream begin? When he was joging and got dizzy or after he went to the doctor and found out what he had and didn't have long to live? I am just confused but I love it...

When you see him collapsed at the end he is clearly in the bank (a security gaurd is giving him CPR).

If you remember there was a point when he was in the bank standing behind the woman and daughter and the room starts to spin, and then it snaps back and he's talking to the teller, and asks her out? That's when he died and the dream began.

Yah I think what Jorrl said is right. But it is hella confusing when you finish watching it.

Confusing to say the least! I hated that ending! Personally I thought the movie was interresting in many ways save for the ending, what was going on in everybodys lives, and I liked the bank robbery as well. I have to say it was a bit pecuilar that all his three friends would join him in this and show no remorse afterwards.

No matter how good the movie was until the surprise ending, the fact that half the movie was a "dream" ruined it completely for me. How can he dream when he's dead? There certainly wasn't enough time throughout the fall and CPR for him to dream for 40 minutes... Explain that somebody?

reply

yeah, the whole "and it was all a dream" thing has been done to death and it probably only worked as an ending the first time (whenever that was?).

Done to death? Name this slew of movies. I can name maybe 5 off the top of my head. But maybe I'm lazy, so why don't you list off another 20 or so movies that used this re-run plot device. I mean, since this has been 'done to death' and when I think of plots/endings that have been done to death I can name offhand 30 movies that have say the geek best the jock, or the best friend get the girl, or the cop save the day etc. IMO, this plot device has been used not hordes of times but several times in the history of film to varying degrees. And is far more original than most movie’s endings. This same theory got mentioned on one of the other few movies I can think of that used this ending, and again, when I asked the person how many films they could think of that used such a lame ending, the answer was very few. Basically, people get duped by a 'gotcha ending', feel stupid they didn't figure it out, so go saying it's unoriginal and been done to death.

And btw, depending on the writing, it’s not as simple as tacking on ‘it was all a dream’ at the end of the film, so don’t go using that as if it’s just bad writing. Bc sometimes this done to death (in like 10 movies) ending actually takes more thought to put together (to be watched again and make sense) so that it’s not just some jigsaw puzzle, but a cohesive idea.
