When did society become uncomfortable singing songs about Christ...

No would ever accuse of the people behind the Muppets of being right-wing. Yet in this special which is secular in nature includes a melody of carols featuring numerous faith based Christmas Carols. People can celebrate Christmas however they see fit but really nice songs have pushed to the side for no reason.

Charles Schulz had to dig in his heels for the recital of the annunciation to the shepherds. Wasn't alive yet in 1965 so I can't say if the counter culture was dominant at the time. But it's doubtful. So you're right, it's not a left/right thing. More a watering down of the culture.

Brings to mind that spoof of The Bachelor on The Simpsons: Promiscuous Idiots' Island. "Our billionaire bachelor gave five lovely ladies a rose of continuation; and he hurled a rock of rejection at anyone displaying intelligence, character or ethnicity."

Fun show, BTW. I've never seen the edited DVD version. Just an old VHS copy taken from TV. Disappointing to hear they tweaked it.
