Real Vegetarians do NOT eat fish

Just to clear that up. Lazy vegetarians eat fish.

reply

You are right they don't. But just to clear something else up, Andie said she was a vegetarian to annoy Ben. He whipped up this nice meal only for Andie to say she can't eat it because she says she is vegetarian, a part of the 'making him dump her' process. She isn't really a veggie.

It's been a while since I've seen this movie, but I don't think she ever actually says the term "vegetarian." She says that she doesn't eat meat. She doesn't say that she doesn't eat fish. Subtle difference, but a difference nonetheless. Kind of like Catholics during Lent. We're not eating meat, but we are still eating fish.

(I used to be a vegan and I know that this distinction makes vegans/vegetarians crazy, but meat and fish are NOT the same thing, and many people, whether veggies think it's ethical or correct or not, do not have the emotional attachment to fish that they do to land animals and therefore continue to eat them.)

reply

Exactly. She never uttered the word vegetarian, she said she doesn't eat meat. Yes, there have been countless arguments on this very board that argue fish is considered meat. However, when they went for lobster, I'm sure it didn't occur to Andie that she would use the not eating meat thing to annoy him. Ben had just spent hours preparing lamb so when she said that, he probably was so bugged, it didn't cross his mind she had eaten lobster. Or it did and he is of the group that does not consider seafood meat.

I always wondered that too! I am a pescatarian actually so I am in the group Andie refers to (I never call myself a vegetarian though). It was kind of a fine line.

That may be true..... however, in this movie, as someone else posted, she only said she doesn't eat meat to annoy Ben. Remember, she's trying to chase Ben away by using all the mistakes women make when they date men. Not only did she eat fish in the movie, but she also ate a hamburger in the office after she met Ben (she complained they forgot the bacon, and Lana told her to take smaller bites) and also at the restaurant they went to after she told Ben she wouldn't eat meat, she snuck into the kitchen to watch the game and was eating there. She also mentioned eating a hot dog at the game with her co-worker.

If, pretending she didn't eat meat, she had said 'I don't eat animal protein', then I would agree with the argument. But she didn't. She just said meat. Obviously she did not view fish as meat.

reply

She was not really a vegetarian, she was just pretending to be one as a means to be more difficult and annoying (which vegetarians are, in my experience) so what difference does it make whether a "real" vegetarian eats fish or not?

"Rock 'n roll martian!"

reply

Remember in one scene at work she is chowing down on a hamburger? She's not a vegetarian.

reply

Vegetarians are not annoying and difficult - that's down to the individual person, just like you are offensive for making that comment. As a whole, vegetarians are compassionate animal lovers. Nothing annoying and difficult about that.

Meat is defined as the flesh and muscle and organs of animals.

First question in 20 Questions is "is it Animal, Vegetable or Mineral?"

Thus, fish are animal.

The crap about their not counting as meat was a ploy the Catholic Church used to prop up their extensive but failing fisheries, thus their edict not counting fish as meat, along with "meatless Friday".

Shellfish are just bottom feeding (thus a repository of the local toxins), tasteless fare that in 18th century America was relegated to prisoners and cat food. Smothering it in butter our sauce is akin to the French cuisine style of sauces smothering their "meat" in the 19th and before, so as to cover the taste of the may rotting! (and as I like to say, if the French cooking had gotten any better since then, they would have dropped the sauces!)

reply

She never said she was a vegetarian. She just said she didn't eat meat. Fish is not considered meat.

reply

She never said she was a vegetarian. Ben had just put a lot of work into a fabulous meal and thought she would love it. So she said she didn't eat meat to annoy him. She was just eating a hamburger in the previous scene, she was obviously not a vegetarian.

People who are posing as vegetarians to feel better or more superior or to get attention frequently eat fish and other sea food without concern. this is the point. when you start dating someone, and they whip this out, it is a red flag, and the kind of thing people get dumped over quite a bit.

reply

Whatever. In the movie she says "too bad I don't eat meat." She presumably means red meat. She never even uses the word 'vegetarian'.
