One thing that REALLY bugs me every time I watch this...

The whole vegetarian scene bugs me where he makes the lamb and then she says she's vegetarian so they go out to eat at a vegetarian place. The reason it bugs me is because he CLEARLY should realize she's not a vegetarian. On their first date they ate at a seafood restaurant where she shoveled tons of lobster in her mouth, lol. It just makes no sense and bugs me every time. That is a pretty big mistake, too. You would think the writers would have picked up on that.

That's not necessarily a mistake. Some vegetarians do eat seafood. The technical name for the practice (for lack of a better word) is Pescetarianism. A vegan only eats vegetables, fruits, grains, etc. Most people (including myself), however, just put it all into the same category under "vegetarianism." So Andie being a "vegetarian" but still eating seafood is possible. :)

I just watched the movie again tonight because I thought the same thing about the tickets....but she was careful with her wording...when he said he wanted to stay home and watch the game with her but he had to go in to work, she said something along the lines of Oh, that's a shame because I have tickets for us tonight...front row...so he just assumes that it is the Knick's game.

No, no, no...You said it. It's over for me. Here lies Carrie. She had two loves and lots 'o' shoes.

It is very annoying that people do that. Simply because im a vegetarian...yet people assume I eat fish. Im not putting forth an argument...im just saying :P

Wherever, whatever, have a nice day...

There are actually quite a few things that bug me in this film, but I think that scene could have been done on purpose by the writers. To show that men don't pay attention to much. We would hope that a guy would realize that she's not a vegetarian, but he didn't even notice.

The vegetarian/non-veg thing bugs me too - and she eats a hot dog at the game later - but he never notices?

reply

Right, she IS NOT a vegetarian, she says it to annoy Ben cos he had just cooked up a meal for them, get it?

reply

Um, yes I "get it" as I'm sure the other poster does, but why doesn't Ben get it. That's our point. I know she's not vegetarian and that she was doing that to annoy him. That's fairly obvious. But Ben should have picked up on that when she threw her tantrum over the lamb he made. HE should had known she wasn't a vegetarian after seeing her eat meat a couple of times and he should have realized she was just trying to annoy him and called her on it. Get it?

She belongs to you...You took her life and gave her a new one, a life extraordinary.

She never eats a hot dog at the game. Also, she never out and out says she's a vegetarian. All she says is "I just I wish I ate meat", sings Mary Had a Little Lamb, then says "You have to take it away before I gag" and makes a gagging sound. Like other posters have said pescatarians do eat fish, so her saying she doesn't eat meat but still eating lobster could indeed make sense if she's a pescatarian instead of a vegetarian.

Oh good god! If I read another post like this I am seriously gonna scream! What Andie ACTUALLY says in the movie is,

"I wish I ate meat!"

Not, "I wish I wasn't a vegetarian!" I know plenty of people who don't eat RED meat either for ethical reasons, digestive reasons or they just don't like the taste! The fact she ate lobster is neither here nor there. Although, I think this idea was perfectly plausible because (as I said before) there are people in the world who don't eat red meat AND Ben was trying to keep her craziness at bay/make her happy and fall in love with him.

OK even better. If she doesn't eat meat because she feels sorry for animals then she wouldn't have eaten seafood. He'd know that

That's simply not true - my wife doesn't eat mean because of her love of animals but eats loads of fish - guess she doesn't like them as much - but even so it happens!

In the film Kate sings a larry the lamb song - lambs are cute I guess she thinks

she became a vegetarian immediately after the lobster scene ...

he may have asked her about the crab, we don't know...the scene just cut to the barley.

I never understand why it's such a big deal because she's not even a vegetarian. She did it to bother him.

It would have been a silly conversation for us to watch to hear him say:
Ben: 'Wait a minute, you at crab on our our first date'
Andie: 'Yeah I know, I eat fish, but not mammal meat'
Ben: 'ok, lets go get barley'

reply

Actually, none of this movie makes sense to me and they are both stupid in making this movie too.

reply

She said she didn't eat MEAT. Seafood is not meat. Therefore, he could have thought she was a vegan or something. A vegetarian, doesn't eat anything that was once alive, but vegans are known to eat fish and poultry.

reply

You do know that vegans don't eat animal products right..? It's like being vegetarian + skipping diary and eggs and stuff.
A pescatarian does eat fish.

I didn't pick up on it either because it's a rom-com and who cares, but i agree he definitively should have noticed. I mean if a girl tells me on the second or third date that she's a vegetarian, i will automatically try to remember what she ate on previous dates to see if it checks out; and not because i wouldn't trust her, but just because that's how the brain works: "Oh yeah true, now i remember she ate a salad last time" or "Huh, didn't we eat sushi last time??" I can hardly believe he didn't make the connection.

As for her reaction, she found the perfect way to be unbearable by saying that because i know i would be really frustrated too after that. I mean, common, when i tell you i will cook for you, can't you tell me then that you are a vegetarian?? Let alone the 2 hours that it took you to make such a meal + missing the game... UGH. But i would have ordered some food instead of going out in order to still see the game... if i gave a damn about sports.

Maybe she's just a really picky, healthy eater and seafood falls under healthy eating where as lamb doesn't. But, in one scene, she eats some kind of burger, so it's safe to assume she was just being annoying.
