Question about Clive's age/ School (Spoilers)

Clive is 18 years old, which should make him a Senior in High School. The film takes place in mid-May, as that is when "Night of 1000 Stevies" occurs, so he should be getting ready to graduate.

My question is, why does Gypsy express concern over Clive "dropping out of school and trashing his perfect 4.0 GPA", when he expresses desire to go to New York City? Where I live, Seniors are almost finished with their classes by the middle of May, so I doubt their would have been any jeopardy of him failing.

Also, at the end of the film, Clive leaves New York to return to Sandusky, because he still has "a lot to figure out." This statement gave me the impression that he was returning home for an extended period of time, but if he was getting ready to finish High School, wouldn't he be returning to New York shortly, to begin college? I assume that he would be going to College in New York, and not Ohio, although his college plans were not stated in the film.

I love this movie, but am curious about this.

Thanks!

Depending on the school system and location, must students do not get out of school until the third week in June.

I believe Gypsy's concern is the 4.0 would allow CLive to go anywhere he wanted for college, leaving all his options open. Dropping out on a whim (NYC) would mean placing limitations on his future.

Yes it depends. Where I'm from we don't official get out and graduate till the end of June. missing 2 months of classes, including important finals, could maybe not fail him but at least drag his grades into the mud. Finals are usually a high percentage of your overall grade.

and as far as the ending goes, I think that "a lot to figure out" is more a reflection of how much about life Clive thought he understood, and didn't. He learned a lot on their trip, and he needs time to consider it and how it affects him. Plus, what's left of his family is in Ohio, and even if he graduates now it's still months before he'd be beginning college, assuming that he's going directly to college and not taking a year off.

Doesn't matter now, devils who paint angels.
