Stevie Nicks!!??!!??

I am a HUGE stevie nicks fan. Will I like this film?

reply

I am also a big Stevie fan, but could not stand this movie. I found the characters, the plot, and the acting to be painfully weak, but I squeamishly watched the whole mind numbing thing. I often get a strange curiosity to continue watching something bad to see just how much worse it can get. I LOVE Karen Black but even her character was just cliche' and weak. There are no songs in the movie with Stevie actually singing...just the main character "Gypsy" slaughtering the Stevie hit "Talk to Me" at a karaoke bar.

reply

Talk to Me is not the best Stevie song anyway. Wait a minute...I thought it was Gypsy 83? Talk to Me was 1985...IDIOTS! What other stevie songs are in it?

reply

The movie's not set in 1983. The character Gypsy was born in '83. There are no other Stevie Nicks songs in the movie because they couldn't get the rights.

reply

You're right, there were no other Stevie Nicks songs in the film. However, Gypsy was not born in 1983. That was when her mother left her. She tells this to Clive during the film, after they leave Bambi's house.

According to what I have read, the reason there are no Nick's songs in the movie is because her publicist ignored requests for them to be included in the movie. I don't think she even got word of this herself. Instead, the seminal LA Goth Rock band Diva Destruction cover's a Nick's song in the movie.

reply

If I had to make a guess, I would say that Stevie's team denied the request because they thought it would look bad for Stevie's image to be part of a movie with gay themes.

reply

I wouldn't really blame her for not giving them the rights, they were stealing her whole act. It's a cute movie though.

reply

"they were stealing her whole act"

No, they weren't. The point of the movie is to get to Night of 1,000 Stevies where people dress as her and - well, you saw the movie. Night of 1,000 Stevies is a real event here in NYC.

"thought it would look bad for Stevie's image to be part of a movie with gay themes."

Uh, highly unlikely since she has quite the gay following, knows this, and is not a homophobe.

I think it might be more financial but I wonder the same thing. the movie doesn't go overboard into the Stevie Nicks stuff and easily could have been a fan love letter that was totally obsessed with Nicks (almost to the point of comedy). I think using it only as a small reference point was good. If they had used a Stevie song, it easily could have become a Stevie movie that she would have wanted input in. And financially, I'm sure it would have cost a fortune (it likely wasn't cheap to use "Talk To Me", although notably it wasn't written by Stevie). Then again, they use the Cure's "Just Like Heaven" in the movie...that can't be cheap, either. I wonder if the movie makers ever approached her or didn't think they needed to since it wasn't never really a Stevie movie).

gypsy's mom left in 1983 and she told clive in the graveyard.
