Spectacularly Awful Film

I've got to say, Evolution was one of the worst films I've seen in my life. Underdevelopment in every category, cheesy acting, terrible ending. I can't imagine wasting an hour and a half of my life like that again.

Cool story bro

Wow. And people say I don't have a sense of humor.

I remember watching this movie with no expectations back when is was released to dvd and laughing so hard i cried.. of course i was like 19 or 20 but i just never understood all the hate.

Same story here. Of course I'm 35 now and I STILL die laughing every time I see it. The lines/dialogue is just so clever. Far more clever than a lot of "hit" comedies and shows. Super underappreciated. But to each their own. We can just be sad for those that didn't enjoy it.

reply

I wish you'd have shared even one "clever" line from this.

The problem is that David Duchovny and Orlando Jones BOTH can portray funny and likeable characters. Both of the main characters here have no morals, act like juveniles and otherwise give us no reason to care one whit about them. Julianne Moore's character is also NOT fleshed out. Why would she suddenly like Kane so much that she'd risk her career for him?

I think this was a script which should have been sent to a few more WRITERS. They needed more FUNNY jokes and needed to create characters we really cared about. Also the entire courtroom scene, though amusing, is completely unrealistic. The U.S. Army, especially when responding to an extraterrestrial threat doesn't need the go-ahead from a civilian court of law. No government agency would allow themselves to be hamstrung during a clearly obvious example of 'National Security". Also the military officers themselves would NOT be testifying at the courtroom. You'd have Government Attorney's from the AG's office or JAG officers representing the U.S. Army. Either way, it was a weird, and not very well thought out film that had a few cute jokes and some really nice special effects.

Dr. Kila Marr was right. Kill the Crystalline Entity.

Oh give it up. You're faulting this movie for being UNREALISTIC? Why can't you just lighten up and have FUN with it? It's a SPOOF.

There is a big difference between being stupid and being unrealistic. There are many successful and funny films which are completely unrealistic - Animal House, The Blues Brothers to name a few, but they just depict events which are very unlikely to happen. They don't do stupid things which make you scream and throw stuff at the screen. STUPID things are things which just don't happen because things aren't set up that way, like having a character who is a Circuit Court Judge who happens to be an 8 yr old girl (for an extreme example) or someone diagnosing you with cancer within the first 5 minutes of being at the doctor's office and then curing you on the same day. That's the 'kind of stupid' I'm talking about. (and yes, those are just wild examples, and not associated with this film).

That's when stupidity detracts from the 'rollicking good time' you seem to pin on everything. I know this is a subtle distinction to some, but most of us can identify what lines cross from slapstick to just dumb.

Dr. Kila Marr was right. Kill the Crystalline Entity.

The fact that from my posts you can make the deduction that I "pin" a "rollicking good time" on "everything" is clear enough indication you don't really want to discuss anything. So be it.

Someone's panties is in a bunch. :/ Read my post with complete neutrality. It's just a discussion of how I split films into the 'forgivable but dumb' and the 'unforgivable and dumb'.

And no, I don't track all of your posts to see how you write. A bit egotistic for someone to assume that as well. :D

It was just a mindless comedy intended for humor, not deep thought. The scene where the bug got into Orlando and the docs pulled it out of his arse was “fall off the seat” funny. Especially the line David said to Orlando, “That thing was this big [indicating size with his hands], you took it like a man!”

Watching Dan Aykroyd on screen requires a rape shower afterwards. I'd rather do something else.....

reply

It really was crap.

I think the movie had 3 decent scenes in it.

Limit of the Willing Suspension of Disbelief: directly proportional to its awesomeness.

reply

It's certainly not the greatest comedy I've ever seen. I think I might have appreciated it more if I saw it when it first came out, maybe?

nope, still terrible

This is a really GREAT movie! If you categorize movies between stupid or realistic, then most are stupid by your definition because most are not realistic. I highly recommend this movie, and so far, everyone has loved it!

Not a great movie in my opinion but good for what it is: A fun diversion :)

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!
