Okaaayyy....
I think this movie could have been great. The surface concept is great. I loved the first half of the movie, as somehow the characters seemed to come across much better, and the dialogue flowed more smoothly. Somehow, I could see this movie having great depth to it, or maybe even providing some kind of religious insight or philosophy. It fell completely flat at the end. It started going downhill when it started getting too fantastical, simply because the two halves of the movie don't feel like they belong together. But then to simply leave it haning like that? Don't get me wrong, a cliffhanger in and of itself is not a bad thing, but the movie never backed up the concept. I don't know what the book is like, but if you use a concept this unique and fragile, you have to have the propper foundation for it. If you present your audience with something that creates such anticipation and potential, you have a responsibility to live up to it. Is the book any different?
