One thing that really embellished this movie as a period piece was the use of top 40 radio hits from the summer of 1961 playing in the background (The Shirelles, etc.). Top 40 radio of the 1950s-1970s has a "time and place" association. You hear a song, and it immediately reminds you of a time and place when/where/with whom you heard it back when. The summer of 1961 really belonged to Gary "U.S." Bonds (Quarter To Three, School Is Out, School Is In...).

The George Jones song "Talk to Me Lonesome Heart" that was playing during the BBQ scene, was from 1967. The movie takes place in 1961.
