Can A-Rod pass Maris?

Alex Rodriguez has a realistic chance of passing Roger Maris as far as most homers in a single season by a Yankee go. Will he do it?

I'll wait until the All-Star break to judge.

If they really crack down on steroid use, I predict that Maris will still hold the American League single season record in 2061.

reply

Haha yeah right man with up and coming players like Ryan Howard and Justin Morneau, the record will be crushed within 5 years. A-rod will most likely do it this year. With players working out more than Marris did and getting stronger, it won't be long.

reply

9 years later, and this still isn't true. Only 1 season in the last 6 did anyone even reach 50.

Maris still holds the AL Home Run record.

reply

Either way, they won't be under the pressure. Now, America lifts players up when they do well...they tried to crush Maris.

reply

Rodriguez may well hit 62. Then again, he didn't manage it in 1998 when everything else favored the slugger. Was there helium in the ball? ;)

reply

no

Ryan Howard is in the National League...and Justin Morneau is an odd choice to break the record. He's a damn good young player, but he didn't even hit 50 in his MVP season. As far as the original poster, now that it's September, it's clear that he won't reach 61 this year unless he has a final month for the ages. As consistent as he is, it's too damn hard for a right handed hitter to hit that many home runs (unless of course they're jacked up on roids, ie McGwire and Sosa).

reply

look, in todays game, to hell with steroids, you still gotta hit the ball....could any of us juice up and dominate in baseball no, and with it all, steroids may give you an extra 20 ft on a fly ball.......but arod doesn't do roids, or anything illegal....arod could easily break it, but also in todays game, when somebody is having that type of year, its not that teams will walk or pitch around them to keep them from a record, they will do it to save some runs, so he could easily do it, but having a legit chance at it is questionable

reply

I agree with diehardsaints steroids or not it still takes something to hit a 90-98 mph fastball from pitcher to hitter that's 2-3 seconds if that. A-Rod 2007 season no maybe 2008 hopefully he is still wearing a Yankees uniform when he achieves it keep it in the family! Just sucks it won't be done in the house that Ruth built but probably in a new stadium.

reply

A-rod to beat maris record Maybe... The all time record i think he can for sure he consistantly hits over 40 a season.

reply

Arod will have a 40 homer season next year, as he usually goes up and down season to season. The person that will break the REAL single season home run record will be Ryan howard. And i *beep* hate the phillies.

you know what really pisses me off? the fact that Mcguire was like, I touched rogers bat, and i felt blah blah blah.. he knew he cheated! He Stood there, with millions of people looking up to him , and he lied. I hope mcguire rots in hell

He COULD pass his Yankee season record, but I don't think he WILL. He got Mantle's total of 54 in 2007, and he hit 57 with the Rangers about 4-5 years ago, but that's as close as I think he'll get to it. But who knows.... he's still only 32 until the end of July.

He's got 518 homeruns right now. And he signed a 10-year deal right? Even if he AVERAGES 30 homers per year, he'd have well over 800.

Who knows how many more Bonds will hit, and who knows if he'll even play anymore. Griffey is at 593 and having regular solid seasons, but too many injuries, and he's turning 39 after the 2008 season, time running out to even catch Aaron. Sosa is over 600, but he's the same age as Griffey. They both might catch Mays and that's it.

I still say A-rod will not hit 61 or more hr in a season. Awesome if he does, but I'm going with no.

A-ROD is a no talent hack who playes for the worst team in baseball history

Lol, an intelligent analysis from a Sox fan. And btw, no I do not think A-Rod could hit 61 as a righty in Yankee stadium. It is just too hard. I think he sort of maxed out last season. I'm sure he will have a great year but I can't see him hitting 61+. I predict in the low 40's this season in HR's, a solid season. I think A-Rod stands a FAR better chance of passing the all-time career HR record that big-neck Bonds currently holds. It will be a great day when a Yankee takes the HR crown once again.

reply

I honestly believe A-Rod is a ballplayer who did not get hopped up on the steroids. And even if he doesn't reach the 61 season mark, he has a damn good chance at reaching the career mark, he's already hit 532 and he's got tons of time left.

and to those who say steroids don't help people hit home runs and that its all talent in hitting a 90mph ball, sure the steroids don't help with the contact but they sure as hell help with the power. A long fly ball on steroids can easily turn into a homer.

Well, well, it transpires that Alex had something extra when he routinely threatened 60.

reply

Maris is still A.L. HR Champion after half a century.

Yes. I agree. And the older I get - and the more the cheaters and liars are exposed - the more respect I feel for Maris and his '61 season.

Somedays it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.

reply

How do you feel now?

reply

Bring the * back for all those cheating basterds. It'll be justice to use it to honor Roger now.

reply

Alex Rodriguez is almost as bad as Bonds. We need Miguel Cabrera or even Hamilton to heat up and set a real record non-frug aided.

reply

Matt Kemp might have a shot at passing Maris. Ryan Howard actually almost did it one year. He hit 58 and the Maris family said they would recognize him as the true record holder. Too bad he came up short.
