Fake Accents
Why do filmmakers insist on having actors employ fake accents in movies where Americans play people of other cultures? First off, not many actors can do an accent well, so having the entire cast try it is a sure failure. This movie is a perfect example. Not only were most of the accents very bad, they mostly tried to emulate the Russian dialect. If you are Polish or know many Polish people, this is a glaring mistake, though perhaps not immediately obvious if you don't. It just makes the whole piece seem ingenuine and cheap. Why not just have everyone use their own voice--aren't the sets, costumes, and subject matter enough to convince people of the context? Making bad actors emply bad accents really degraded the quality of this film for me. The whole thing felt like a farce.
Was this an effective tactic to you, or did you find it erroneous to the plot?
