no sympahy for connie whatsoever

she completely ruined her husband and child's (as annoying as that kid was BAD casting) lives. and ruined paul's life. i do think paul needed a huge wakeup call into not effing with people's wives. and allowing it to happen. and being ok with it, thinking it's ok to sleep with someone's wife. when he saw how nervous she was the first time. even though she wanted to, she was a mess, and he could have stopped it. so he did need a wake up call but didn't deserve to be murdered. i think edward was a good person and literally snapped in that moment and didn't think he would kill him by hitting him with that. i really don't think in his right mind he thought im going to kill him now. i felt awful for him, and bad for paul and paul's family. but connie? no. she was a grown a$$ adult who knew exactly what she was doing the entire time and while she may have not realized this would end in murder, therefore losing her husband to prison, which will also eff up her kids life, she knew she was lying and cheating and being a horrible human being. her husband was loyal, giving, decent, kind, and also seemed sexual. if she was bored, then go to marriage counseling or tell him what you need to be happier. she should have been the one dead or in prison if anyone. i hated her character and felt no sympathy at all. and one again i must reiterate how annoying i find that kid to be. richard gere and diane lane are both beautiful. and their personalities were lax. and they produce an extremely unattractive, not cute at all kid with huge ears who acts mentally challenged and/or ADHD or basically like a 5 year old at 10 years old? really? the casting was great except for him and having a diff kid would have made this movie way better. what were they thinking with him??? unless he was SUPPOSED to be slow but theyd don't mention that. not one mention of his "his special needs" or classes or something. so he was just an annoying, not cute kid who i wanted to not hear or see in every scene he was in.

Ok i only disagree on Connie going to jail or been killed but apart from that im with you, i just couldn't sympathize with her.

She had everything going right in her marriage and she still cheated because a guy invited her to his place by courtesy, it was her desicion to call him the next time and persued the affair for no single reason than just being horney.
Im surprised Adrian Lyne made a female character as unsympathetic as Connie. Hey I could even sympathise a bitt with nut case Alex Forrest.

But Connie had no single good reason to do what she did than just a whimp. I usually sympathise with the Adrian Lyne ladies and female audultetrers on film even when the husband is Pierce Brosnan in Butterfly on a wheel but here thw wife was plain stupid with no real motive.

However I don't accept killing or jail for adulery, come on that's so regresive and old century but certainly this time I wasn't rooting for the lovers here.
Im really surprised I didn't like Connie Adrian Lyne is great at making colorful and very complex female characters that in one or another I sympathize with them like : Lolita ( well that wasn't his creation but still made her very likable and sympathetic), Diane in Indecent Proposal, Elizabeth in 9 1/2 weeks, alex Forrest and Dan's wife in Fatal Attraction but Connie had no reediming qualities.

She is the female "good" protagonist ive disliked the most and one of the most frustrating.

of course i dont believe people should be murdered or put in jail for cheating i meant IF anyone in *this* particular film was going to end up in jail, character wise Connie was the one i would have liked to seen accidentally murdered or gone to jail for something else if the director wanted jail and murder in the movie, i was saying if only it were connie since she was the only one who got out of it other than feeling guilt and shame and regret for the rest of her life, though because she has a child her motherly instinct would hopefully kick in and connie as shi**y as she was seemed to be a strong willed person she prob would have gotten herself together after awhile as a person to be a good mom, so ultimately she did get out of it mostly unscathed where as her husband will be in jail for life and her lover is dead. but i was not saying at all i think when people cheat they shoulg go to jail or be klled LOL. i meant IF anyone HAD to in THIS movie. come on now. im not some barbaric idiot.

Ohh all right sorry, it wasn't exactly your comment which scared me, its just in almost every film about adultery this subject of punishing the adulterer come very scary comments so i wanted for that reason to clarify I didn't agree with the killing stuff.

But yes its sad how everyone paid for her actions, sure not getting killed but the one who should have faced the consequences should have been her so yeah i agree with you.

I liked the movie. She was a little bored with her life. There was no sexual chemistry between her and her husband -- maybe they could have fleshed that out a bit to make Connie more sympathetic. But what I like is that these are real situations -- right or wrong, people stray. She was tormented by it and she did finally stop it. But this is how life is. People cheat. People love. People forgive. Her husband was a weak -- he never even confronted her -- maybe he didn't want to lose her. I felt SO bad for him when he commented, "she goes to the movies with him"? It also shows that there are things missing in their marriage. He doesn't know anything about her -- and even when he suspected something was up, he never asked her. And I liked the kid :-) Big ears and all. We're so used to wise cracking kids in movies (which I DETEST). It think this character was an honest portrayal of a normal kid. Good looking people have ugly kids. Not all kids are geniuses. Many peoples lives are mundane and unremarkable. People have affairs. And this is the story of one.

I agree. I feel Connie's character wasn't developed enough. It's obvious she's a good wife and mother, but bored... obviously younger than Gere and he's rather boring.
She meets the young, French, sexy and interesting guy who turns her on and it's hot. So, she makes a mistake... and ends it, too late.
I like the kid! Who cares what he looks like! He isn't slow at all!

Yeah I pretty much agree on everything you had to say about the character of Connie in this film. And I think it's also quite obvious, particularly when you consider the fact it's an Adrian Lyne film, that Connie was/is essentially the female counterpart of Dan Gallagher in Fatal Attraction. They both had wonderfully loving and caring spouses whom they both willingly cheated on for really nothing more than simply wanting to engage in sexual thrills and excitement with another individual.

I'ld still like to point out though the few differences between the two characters in each film if I may. Firstly you could see and tell that Connie, for whatever particular reason or cause, seemed to be somewhat unhappy and unfulfilled with the life she had with her family. Dan on the other hand seemed perfectly happy with his family and with the life he led in general. Secondly Dan was very much willing to commit the act of adultery with Alex Forrest. Connie however seemed to be just a bit more hesitant and conflicted over her ultimate decision to have an adulterous affair behind her husbands back though she finally submitted, quite willingly, to having the sexual affair with Paul. Thirdly, while Dan saw has affair with Alex as a mere weekend fling and nothing more, Connie wanted very much to continue on with her and Paul's sexual affairs. So in essence, while Dan wanted absolutely nothing more to do with Alex after their sexual encounter(s), Connie wanted to continue seeing Paul to prolong their sexual relationship.

So we could I suppose argue and debate as to which one of these two characters was/is 'worse' as far as cheating on their respective spouses is concerned. But it more than likely would prove to be a rather futile discussion as, in the end, neither one of these two particular characters should be allowed to be let of the hook in any way whatsoever over their consensual decisions which led them into their consensual actions.

I freakin' HATED that little boy! He was a real detriment within this otherwise fantastically casted and acted, as well as extremely affecting, film. He was, as Matt Dillion's character said in There's Something About Mary, a goofy bastard! Yes I know that's a terribly insensitive comment for me to make, but the fact of the matter is that this kid would often take me out, both mentally and emotionally, of what was/is a very engrossing and involving picture just a bit too much for my own personal liking. It was just a horrid casting decision on the part of the filmmakers IMO.

And please excuse me for using the word freakin in this post!

I don't think she planned the affair nor was she supposed to be seen in a sympathetic light, I think the movie just wanted to illustrate how vulnerable people can be and the consequences basically of being human. I do believe she loved her husband and later her lover as well. I often wonder if she would have left her husband in the end, had her lover not been killed. .?

Would Paul have wanted her in a committed relationship? I don't think so. We don't know why he was separated from his wife. Maybe he was a serial cheater. If he hadn't been murdered, I don't think he would have wanted a committed relationship with Connie.
Who knows, right?
Cheers!
