The bathtub scene

I've seen this many times and still cannot decide on an interpretation. When Connie and Edward are in the bath, and he starts to initiate sex she looks pained and borderline disgusted. Is that from guilt OR is that because she was just w/ Paul and is completely besotted w/ him and therefore, she a bit turned off (or at least not turned on) by her husband?

Thoughts?

I'm thinking she didn't want to spoil her mood - she was daydreaming about having been with Paul earlier in the day. Plus the fact that she couldn't completely wash off the magic marker arrow and heart Paul had drawn on her lower abdomen - and maybe she was afraid that Edward would see it.

reply

Yes. She couldn't get off all the magic marker. It was faint, but still showed. You can't get something like that, on your stomach, by accident. It would have given the whole game away, in an instant. A stupid move on Paul's part. He might as well, have drawn an X, on her forehead.

reply

I always thought this was to show EXACTLY how callous Paul really was.
He knew how hard it would be to get that magic marker off her body, that there was a chance that Edward might see it.

He never cared one whit about Connie, he was just looking for a lay & someone's mind to play with. He was a sadistic jackass.

I agree about Paul.

Paul was a sadist - but Connie was an actual masochist who LOVED being submissive and totally dominated by Paul, sexually. It was only when she was away from Paul that she logically did NOT want to be caught. She liked her big house and her nice lifestyle and was fond of her husband as an adequate father and provider.

Unfortunately Edward was NOT (presented at any rate) as any kind of sadistic demanding lover for Connie - and would not even "play rape" her, nor have sex with her "in public" like in a restaurant restroom. This lack of sexual honesty between them was a definite communications problem.

Paul might have been hurt by his ex-wife (cheating/leaving HIM, maybe) and seemed to not be interested in any actual relationship with Connie beyond the great "kinky" sex they had. He didn't care about Connie being late to pick up her son, or if her husband found out about him. I don't think he would really care if Connie had just dumped him, actually.

reply

I interpreted it as both guilt and lack of interest.

reply

I think in this instance she was worried Ed would see the magic arrow marker as she hadn't managed to wash it off completely.

reply

She was probably full . She had French food . Lol

I took it as the occurrence of "The Cheater's Distancing". The person who is betraying their loved one often will pull away, in every sense, from the person they are with.
Its mostly guilt, partly disinterest.

You picked a mighty fine day to be on the Unfaithful message board. Happy Valentine's Day (despite me reading this 9 months later, haha)

The answer is : Guilt. Also, fear that he would notice something had changed, up to and including her failures to appear into the sex. Also, an inability to reconcile his entitlement to her body.

So like I said, guilt.

my thoughts on this: She was sore.

reply

YES! Exactly what I thought, the way she moved, squirmed & the look on her face.

reply

lol I just think she didnt want to have sex with Gere in the same day as having sex with Paul... Its why she wouldnt let him come near, and why she clamped her legs closed in the bath.

We’ve all been there, where our mind is completely wrapped up by a lover. The sex was so good you obsess about it over and over. Any sort of distraction becomes a nuisance, you just want to be left with your thoughts
