I'm trying to like this series

I really hope season 2 is better. I'm having a very difficult time getting through season 1. I have to force myself to watch it. I have one more disc to go. It seemed like it had potential, but I've only really enjoyed a couple of episodes. Dante is a good strong male character, but the teenage girl is just way too annoying. The other woman just doesn't do anything for me and has no chemistry with Dante. They needed a couple of more characters. These 3 just don't click.

reply

I'm watching it for the first time now and am having a different reaction. Tanya Allen is the highlight of the show for me. It's cheesy, but I'm finding it worthwhile to enjoy her quirky, childlike performance.

reply

I'm glad you're enjoying it. I had a very difficult time getting through that season. I was just going to give up because I found it unwatchable. Season 2 was a completely different story. There is no comparison. That was a great season with a great cast that had chemistry and was fun to watch. It was basically a different show. I liked Tanya Allen much better in season 2. I thought she was more attractive, she played an adult, and I didn't find her annoying. But she did kinda seem like she was forced at gunpoint to do this show. She just seemed like she was phoning it in and showed little personality. But I found it a welcome change from the character she played in season 1

reply

Exactly, Tanya is the main reason I kept on watching the show back when it originally aired. All I can remember of Dante was a lot of really awkward stiff acting.

reply

I just watched the first two episodes on DVD last night and I have to say, I found much of it to be annoying and beyond believability. Why would anyone in their right mind even consider giving a gullible, teenage brat the responsibility of running the ship by herself, with a highly dangerous prisoner aboard, no less?! If I were Uncle Dante, I would have kicked Percy off of the ship! I doubt if I'll be watching the rest of this show.

"That mans' nuts!!! Grab 'em!"

reply

Well, with a show where people live on a spaceship, and aliens have given people super-powers, suspension of disbelief is a must. Lol. Percy was supposed to be something of a savant, and his niece. Plus, keeping her on the ship was supposed to keep her out of harm's way. But it was kind of ridiculous that three people ran such a huge ship. In one episode, there was an an entire ship level with people frozen in cryogenics that no one even knew about for the last 50 years. The show had highs and lows. Almost done with season one, and will then start season two.

We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.

reply

Such may be the case, but let's put it this way; do you think Captains Kirk or Picard would let a teenage brat run the Enterprise by herself? That being said though, there are shows with a similar premise that are light years better. Take the wildly original Lexx for example--one undead bounty hunter, a not-too-bright janitor, a runaway sex slave and a cyborg's head living aboard an enormous, living, dragonfly-like ship, getting into strange situations! Lexx was unique, creative and funny, too. Starhunter, on the other hand suffers from a poor concept as well as being very pedestrian and uninspired.

I got two utterly spiteful, disgusting, hatred-filled words for ya:

Apparently, you've been on a binge with your replies during the past two days, eh? You need to get back under your bridge, troll.

I'm about as active most days and on many boatrds. How does that make me a Troll?
Or are you one of those that just likes to kick off?

reply

Why, yes, of course I am! After all, you ought to know, right?. LMFAO

reply

How ought I to know when this is the first time we've met... unless you're one of several sockpuppets?
That you would start screaming 'Troll' when someone makes a joke in mild dispute of your post is my only indicator.

reply

Finally made it through S1 and starting on S2.
The second is easier, but throughout 1 there are so many similarities to the later-released Firefly, it's uncanny... 'Annoying' Percy is a definite blueprint for Kaylee, for example.

reply

I like this show better. Firefly and Serenity was a show about criminals who were framed as good.

This show is about bounty hunters who tend to be the good guys, but framed as bad guys on occasion. They in fact do actually operate with law and order.

reply

Firefly was about people who did not want to be ruled by a dictatorship they didn't vote for, who were oppressed by that dictatorship, who tried to go elsewhere and be left alone but kept getting *beep* over by that same dictatorship, and who then decided to break the rules of that dictatorship in order to get by. Their status as criminals depends only on territory.

reply

It's true they didn't want to be ruled, but they were still criminals by anybody's standards. Running drugs, kicking someone into a jet intake out of anger ... that's not normal behavior by any convention. So, no, they're criminals regardless of how you look at it.

reply

Criminal status depends entirely on where the deed takes place and the law covering that location...

Running drugs

I don't recall any drugs being run... unless you refer to the stolen medicines that they then sold on at a discounted rate to those Outer Rim worlds that wouldn't normally have access to them, or the train heist that they later returned upon learning the contents?
Certainly no narcotics...

kicking someone into a jet intake out of anger

That was an example to others and pragmatic elimination of a known threat. Working for Niska, chances are he was wanted dead or alive anyway, in which case it's perfectly legal. Also arguably self-defence, too.

that's not normal behavior by any convention. So, no, they're criminals regardless of how you look at it.

Criminal ONLY if it's illegal in their location.
Otherwise it's just a question of personal morality.

Montana himself isn't above breaking local laws to keep Percy safe either, though... That technically makes him a criminal, however corrupt the local law might be!

reply

Criminal ONLY if it's illegal in their location.
By US standards it's criminal.

reply

>>Criminal ONLY if it's illegal in their location.

By US standards it's criminal.

They're on another completely different planet, not in the United States of America... I realise that distinction may not always seem evident, though!! 

reply

It's a kind of scaled down scifi show. It's essentially bounty hunters in space. Take some bounty hunter cases, stick them on a space craft, and you got yourself a show.

It's a little hard to take at times because it is so gritty, but I think it's fairly clever, if somewhat stark.

reply

I don't know about scaled down. But I thought it basically sucked. The premise was good but it could've been great. really bad cast and horrible writing. Season 2 was pretty good though. It could've been huge. They dropped the ball

reply

As with so many other shows and films, the studio holds the purse strings so the studio calls the shots... and it looks like the studio called a lot of shots over and above the actual showmakers, in this.

reply

Who's ever fault it was, it was horrible

Oh really? How would you have produced it, then?

reply

Sounds like you're suggesting that I shouldn't criticize a tv series unless I can do a better job myself or have a better idea on how to produce it. I am not a producer but I enjoyed the 2nd season. Something more towards that.
