problems

although i'm usually the first to slander people who chronically HAVE to compare in order to reach a decision/judgement, i say this with no highbrow disdain: i preferred this movie to la haine. perhaps it is just because it deals with ethnic minorities that are more relevant to france/paris (wasn't vincent cassel's character meant to be russian?)
my only disappointment with the film was the scene where toussaint is killed. there was a good buildup and then it just waned down..i would have preferred a more ceremonial killing perhaps to make it more dramatic. but i guess the focus was on desiree and not the gang.
my mother came into the room half way through to do some sewing, and after five minutes exclaimed "but why do they make films like this! c deprimant de voir ca!" which i thought was highly amusing.
they need to make more films like this. it's easy to be completely ignorant of what goes on in sarcelles, courbevoix etc, because the french completely shun these societies for not nicely representing france when in fact their only solution is to ignore the problem and leave them stranded. of course there are immigration problems (which led to this mess in the first place) but education should be forced, even branded into the french youth(of any nationality/ethnicity) of today.
throughout this film i wondered, who is to blame? the parents for their refusal to comply with the secular laws and the fact that they're so busy working their culs off to pay the rent of their crumbling f2's- the state for not caring?- is military dictatorship the only thing left? (if Sarko gets elected we'll see)
the fact of the matter is that a lot more dialogue needs to take place. and as we've seen with the events of 2006, they're not going to keep quiet.

it's a dirty world Reich, say what you want
