Worst music/score ever

This film has the worst and most unfitting score/music ever. It hurt the film. I though it was a great film but the music drove me insane. Potentially tense moments were made laughable by the cheesy guitar riffs. What the F? I still recommend the film and any other Jonnie To movie you can get your hands on.

I don't doubt it. That doesn't make it any better. Is he making a parody of his own film?

You're right; I cannot get over the themes, the boring, extremely long and vapid guitar-solos. To add hurt to injury, the guitar-licks are at times technically not up to speed with what they probably should sound like. It's like the soundtrack to "Top Gun" never happened.

Glad someone agrees. It may have been great for Asian audiences but I think most North American viewers would not see the art in it.

reply

completely agree. all the music is horrible. in particular the part where he climbs the staircase for 5 minutes. JT was obviously trying to build huge amount of suspense but the cheesy 80's guitar/synth whatever completely ruined the scene, it really struck me the first time i saw it as it was probably the worst choice of music for a scene ive ever heard.

reply

yes, the part where he climbs the staircase was just horrible because of the music, it totally didnt match the situation.

You people are all kidding, right? Watch more Asian films and get used to this kind of music. Being a fan of Johnnie To and having seen most of his films, the music was not a surprise whatsoever. He's frequently used traditional Hong Kong film scoring that is different to Western movie soundtracks. It fit the film perfectly. Some good news for people who did like the score: there is a Milkway Image/Johnnie To soundtrack collection which features one song from this film on it. You can buy it on YesAsia, if you're interested.

THANK YOU FOR OPENING THIS TOPIC.
For real this one's music drives me crazy ! !
I was really afraid that i was the only one who thought that way. Glad to see that someone elses agreed with me.
The music didin't have anything to do with the plot -> for example in a thrilling scene where police force are exploring a abandoned apartment building, they really succeeded to suck that scene by putting a guitar riffs that belongs to 70's pornfilm. AARG though that the movie was good the music really succeeded to ruin most of the film.

reply

I agree with krankcolc, the music didn't do the film any good.
Johhny to is a good director, but he needs some advice in choosing music.
I even started to fast-forward the films when I started to hear those teaching-guitar-lessons riffs...

"What if there is no tomorrow? there wasn't one today...!"

Have you watched many Hong Kong movies? Most Hong Kong movies aren't made to the taste of an international audience, they are more focused on the Hong Kong and chinese market, so they are a bit different and also have some stuff that don't appeal to the tastes of the world, so get with it or just don't watch it.

reply

thers just no Michael beep Jackson or *beep* Timberlake... and u american guys are comepletly lost??? .... just watch holliwood crap and everithing will be ok...

reply

We never said the music was bad, just that it did not fit the scenes very well and was quite a distraction to an otherwise fantastic film. Also, I doubt anyone who has taken the time to comment on this particular thread is a big fan of Hollywood-type films. PTU only saw a very limited theatrical release in the US and has no official Region 1 release (a Tai Seng release hardly counts but that is another thread all together), so they would have to be an Asian film or Johnnie To fan. No one is lost sir, just entitled to an opinion.

sory for my english.... it won't be great...but i think u culd understand it...

...yeah somehave i can understand u... i mean i saw Jonnie To "Mission" from 1999 (if u can grab it just try-nice mowie), like 5 years ago.... and music was realy strange... realy disturbing, not fit on it, a "cheap Garage Band stuff".....but somehove (yeah i know this just don't speal like that) when i saw it 2nd time it was OK and on the end even "great" (...steel strange, but great) and it's the same guy caled "Chi Wing Chung" (something like HK Moroder or Coder...) ....
i mean.. did u saw SCARFACE last days?... (we all love-it...) and Giorgio Moroders music REALY SUCS... but somehove it was the time, the moment for.... or Paris, Texas with Ry Cooders music... somehove morre "important then the mowie" (and i hate Ry Cooder...he he)

BUT it's much better then MATRIX or..... when we allways "cast" some Raige Against Machine "for UP" and some Massive Attack "for DOWN" (even thet i like them both...) it so boring NO???.... so have a good night and sory again......

I thought the score itself was quite good, but I thought it was poorly applied to some scenes. The upbeat tone of some of the parts didn't work in scenes that were obviously supposed to be tense. I thought the score worked best in the montage sequences.

I liked the main theme, very catchy and sort of Hans Zimmer's electric guitar scores like in Drop Zone. Johnny To's movies have some of the best scores like Longest Nite, the Mission, Running Out of Time, and A Hero Never Dies.

I actually found the musiv perfect, it had a summery late night feel to it and for me it intensified the scenes.
I just love the scene they go up the stairs and even though it's clear/known what's gonna happen, the scene is tense.
