I've been told by a native German-speaker that the set is NOT available with subtitles, and so far not for "region 1"--U.S. and Canada. So you need some German--mine is not great, but I understood almost all of the film--and a PAL (region 2-playing) machine.
Believe me, it's worth it! I think it's a crying shame that Die Manns--ein Jahrhundertroman is NOT available with subtitles! It is so very, very...good. The dramatization is excellent, and the interviews with Katja, Erika, Golo, Frido, Monika, Mann's secretary, Hilde Kahn, Klaus Pringsheim, Jr. and above all Elizabeth Mann Borgese are fantastic!

Go to amazon.de (that's Germany)--it was selling for a song last time I looked. Feel free to write in English. I have nearly worn it out! amazon.de is very friendly, and even accepts reviews in English (and probably other languages as well).
When I say "for a song," I AM taking the 680 minutes of film into consideration!!

type in simply the words Thomas Mann on the right--after picking DVD from the drop-down menu on the left. Don't type "movie," of "documentary," or ANYTHING ELSE. Then you will get, under
Thomas Mann, Thomas Mann dvd. Click on that. It's the second one listed--shows Armin-Mueller-Stahl in profile with a big cigar in his mouth.
It's still there. Das ist ein herrlicher Film!
