Why was the lesbian mean to Elle?

Why?

I think part of it was her judging Elle on superficial things, like the fact that Elle was blond and loved shopping. I think the other part of the reason is, because of the first reason, she was willing to believe things she heard/assumed, like Elle calling her a mean name, even though Elle never did.

She's the worst excuse for a feminist I've seen.

Instead of encouraging a fellow woman to pursue her goals despite society's ridicule, she joins right in and even perpetuates the cruelty. She demeans her intelligence simply because of her demeanor, which no educated person should do.

I think you all are missing the point. This movie was full of stereotypes, and breaking those stereotypes.

For example: The feminist lesbian, the uber-intelligent looking down their noses at "the average," the big, not-so good looking nerd being unable to get a date, and finally, the "dumb" blonde.

All of these wound up being broken. Enid (the lesbian) at first believed the rumor that Elle would be superficial and cruel enough to call Enid a "d*ke," when she didn't, David (the big guy who couldn't get anywhere with the girls) finally got a decent reputation thanks to Elle sticking up for him, and finally, people eventually came around and got to know Elle, they saw she wasn't as dumb as she first appeared to be, and that she is a genuinely nice person.

Now, as to whether or not any of this is realistic or not (the breaking down of these stereotypes), that is a whole other story.

I see your point, but I really can't understand why a proud feminist would put down any woman who not only made it into Harvard Law but genuinely wanted to succeed. It's shameful.

I got the impression that Enid had been picked on by sorority girls similar to Elle in the past and she assumed Elle was made of the same stuff.
I always thought the reference to Elle calling Enid a d*ke behind her back was just an example of the behaviour Enid expected from someone like Elle.

Vivian told Enid that Elle called her a D**e. She lied!
