Vivian is misunderstood

People think she was just a hateful snob but she wasn't. Yes, most of the people were a bit snobbish but Vivian had friends and was the one who planned that party that she told Elle was a costume party.
She mainly had a problem with Elle because she was Warner's ex-girlfriend. Vivian was like everyone else who didn't take Elle seriously but she was mainly mean to her because Elle was competition. When Elle started showing more seriousness and good ethics and Warner showed bad ethics, Vivian took notice so she decided to try to be Elle's friend. Warner showed himself to be the one who wasn't serious and was instead a jerk who was okay with getting by because of his family.

Is that like Nina Simone misunderstood, the Animals misunderstood or Santa Esmeralda misunderstood??

I don't think Vivian was truly hateful. She was very insecure about her relationship with Warner. Lots of girls get a bit catty when their boyfriend's ex is around. And she had a bit of a reason to dislike Elle at first. When Elle initially got to Harvard, she was trying to get Warner back. Of course, Vivian wouldn't want Elle hanging around them. Then she saw Elle's true character and Warner's true character and realized that Elle was a very good person. That said, I don't think Warner was a bad guy or anything. He was a bit selfish and self-centered but not a horrible person.

True, Warner wasn't terrible but selfish and self-centered.

Um...yeah, that would make him a terrible boyfriend/husband and therefore a terrible person within the context of the story.

I think his selfishness and self-centeredness is what makes him terrible.

I don't know that I'd say she was misunderstood so much as she was, like many people, situationally bad. That is to say, she was probably a perfectly nice person to anyone in her own world, but a total bitch to anyone outside of it whom she decided she didn't respect. It's amazing how many people think it's perfectly okay not to show even a basic level of courtesy below which they won't go.

Elle had just left her insular rich world on the West Coast to visit an equally rich, insular and very close-minded world on the East Coast. Vivian was still *in* her own world. Elle had left her comfort zone; Vivian was secure within her own. It therefore took her a much longer time to show the growth that Elle did, especially since she started at such a low point.

Of course, in Vivian's defense, it was a bit stalkery for Elle to follow her ex all the way to Harvard (though many people have done this and ended up staying for the education, forgetting about the ex). On the other hand, Elle didn't do anything that would make it "okay" for Vivian to act the way she did, either. Vivian also seemed a bit naive about men in the sense that she didn't think through too hard what Elle's existence said about the West Coast guy she'd known for all of a few weeks before he proposed.

She's known Warrener longer then a few weeks and he wasn't a west coast guy. Him and Vivian went to prep school together and they reunited over the summer.

It's not made particularly clear how long they've known each other. Either way, he moved on very quickly from Elle to Vivian and then got engaged to her even more quickly. Those were two huge red flags that Vivian chose to ignore.

It wasn't for a few months though since when they all meet after class he states that she's his old girlfriend from prep school. Vivian is an ex that he's obviously knew for a while that he got back together with and engaged to. It's not uncommon to get back with an ex and then become engaged to them after a short time since they have already been together in the past. My sister reunited with her daughter's dad and married him all in a a couple of months and now they have been married 5 years so it's not exactly a red flag.

All the more reason for Vivian to be wary. There's no way she could have known him so long without seeing his true colors.
