In the marketing of this film, why do they try to hide the fact that the man helping her is gay??
shareThey didn't. And in the first two minutes of the movie its clear that Ving Rhames character is a gay drag queen so it's not like he's closeted or anything.

Holiday being gay was not a very significant plot point to the story. That he was a drag queen/transvestite served some purpose in placing him on the edges of society's bell curve, but Nikki didn't slow his roll any more than she would have if he'd been straight.
I'd call it: "Man gets stuck with drug addict's kid and everybody learns to redefine the meaning of family."
