Unsuited for remake. (spoilers)

There are many good things about this film, Swinton's performance, the Lake Tahoe setting and the attempts to update it by giving it a gay twist are all laudable, unfortunately it's a remake of a 1949 film of a 1947 novel and you can tell.

It's simply too old fashioned, Visnjic's soft hearted blackmailer is simply not a credible character in this day and age, especially when contrasted with Nagel, an old fashioned heavy who seems to have stepped straight from a 40's film noir, which of course he has, in a sense. I haven't even mentioned the unfortunately timed heart attack, a plot contrivance that simply doesn't cut it anymore.

As remakes go its not at all a bad film, but ultimately the source material isn't suitable for modern adaptation.

Well, I definitely preferred the 49 version, but Swinton was amazing.

I just finished the book and loved it. But I knew that a couple of movies had been based on the book -- in particular this version with Tilda Swinton. I hadn't seen it, but I knew it wasn't a period piece, so I wondered how they would update it. Because the book really depicts a time that no longer exists.

Sounds like this is not a successful update. Is the Max Ophuls version available anywhere?
