Bill Bellamy's Character

I just watched The Brothers and for the most part I really enjoyed the movie. My one question though is about Bill Bellamy's character. In the movie his character Brian was getting tired of black women and he dated a white woman briefly. But what I was disappointed about most was that they didnt follow up much on that. Yeah she messed up his car but I thought that in the end things would be good with them. Instead they show him at the party putting the moves on a black woman. Still a good movie but I was disappointed about his character.

I acquiesce, I was also somewhat disappointed by that. The film-makers could have shown the angle of Black-on-white love being just as beautiful as black-on-black.

^i agree with drago, but ultimately the Brian Palmer character story arc is just paying lip service to black women.and as a black woman i hate that.

I was a bit disappointed in Bellamy's character altogether, and it's not over the girl from Buffy either... it's about his character having some real depth involving his mother and brother, but they only skimmed over what could have been a solid arch to follow. There appeared to be real damage and room for healing. My guess is that if this movie was based on a book, we'd see the full storyline behind his character.

I think what the maker of this film was doing with Brian's characrter is show how ridiculous to start dating white women just because he was mad at all black women. It's also wrong to date white women for the wrong reasons. If he was going to date the white woman, it should have been because he really liked her, not simply because she was white. However, I did see that they had some chemistry. But I guess in the end, brian felt dumb for what he had done.

"Eva's sisters gave her a cross with Jesus on it for her birthday, the next day Jesus was gone!"

Thank u soo much for writing that, i was waiting to see if someone was going to mention that he was with her for the wrong reasons....so thanks :)

people knew he was with her for the wrong reason. but they wanted him to overcome those issues. and realize she was good for him because of the chemistry they had and not because she was white. my guess is that the writers didn't expect them to be so good together on screen.

At least that explains why the black women in the theater, where I saw the movie, actually cheered for the white woman giving Bill Bellamy's character the evil eye, when she walked past him with her bigger, black boyfriend. It's like she got a black guy upgrade...from Sherman Hemsley to Will Smith. I've never seen that in my life...seeing black women cheering "You go, girl!" to a white woman with a black man. And unfortunately, I'll probably never see that ever again.

I agree. Since black love is so rarely portrayed, I think black women want to see that first, since they're black.

Yeah they had great chemistry! some times that happens. but keeping them together would have been totally politically incorrect considering the character's ignorant view of black women. i for one wouldn't mind seeing a IR relationship portrayed as healthy in films for once. they're all portrayed very negatively, and cynically.

yeah bill's character was dating the white woman for all the wrong reasons (even though they had a lot of chemistry)- he was basically just trying to prove a point about his view about dating black women...which didn't gel too much w/me. I am a white woman and I thought they should have delved more into why bill's character preferred white woman over black women, the movie didn't give us enough back story and/or information on bill's character...but bill and the white chick (i forget her name in the movie) had tons of chemistry and i think they could have made their relationship work, but bill's character was just too confusing. usually black women hate when black men date white women so i am shocked that you had black women cheering her on, i think thats pretty cool. i guess they must have thought that bill's character was sort of an a-hole they way he treated black and white women.

Brian (Bill Bellamy's character) was reacting to his upbringing. Remember his trip to his mother's house? She was a really negative character who had relationships problems with black men and blamed them for all her problems. She projected her anger and frustrations onto her sons (remember Brian had a younger half brother who lived with his her and was causing her problems). Probably through most of their childhood. That's why Brian disliked black women. If anything they should have shown him dating, not just white women but also latino and asian women because his preference was for any woman who wasn't black. But the director and screenwriter did a poor job highlighting the message of his character.
