Is the English dub better?

We (my family) recently borrowed this film from the DVD store. The DVD consisted of two versions of the movie, one with French audio with English subtitles, and one with dubbed English audio. For authenticity's sake we watched the one with French audio (none of us actually speak French).

The English subtitles were poor at best. Often the sentences didn't make sense, and I could tell that they were done by someone who cared only for translating the words directly from French to English; barely any English puns or references were included (as opposed to the Asterix comics where the translators have done a fine job of making many English puns).

I enjoyed the movie, but I really wish the subtitles had been better. Does anyone know if the English dub is any better at all? Or is it just like the English subtitles on the French version. We only have the movie for a week, and if I dont get any replies I will investigate the English dub, but some confirmation would be appreciated.

Cheers in advance, Blip

PS: If there are any French people here I'd love to see what they thought of the movie. I presume the French puns and references improve the experience to no end.

The English dub has 21 minutes cut. 21 minutes worth of laughs. Bastards...

Yeah, the movie is good but the English subtitles are badly-written. As you said, many of the references, jokes weren't translated, so to English-speaking people they make no sense. Still, there were some good laughs but nowhere near as many as the original comic. I just wish the English translators had taken on the job of translating this movie instead of the mediocre translation we were left with.
I tried watching some of the truncated English dubbed version and the voices just didn't work.
