For those who don't speak French, DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THIS FILM!!!

I liked it. It stayed relatively close to the comics, yet it did get a few new jokes in. I laughed enough and smiled throughout the film. It's no masterpiece, but it wasn't supposed to be, and you shouldn't watch it with that expectation.
Overall a rather enjoyable movie.
_____________________________ Let me tell you a story to chill the bones
I loved this film more than the first. I watched the original with English subtitles. Like an old Batman TV episode, it works on a childs level and an adult level. And more importantly, like the original comics, which were developed as an educational play on words, the film keeps to this ideal.
Oh, come on. The movie rocks. It's fun, it's clever, it's got Alain Chabat...
But, yeah, I guess you've just got to be french to understand the humor behind it. Chabat and most of the other people in the movie (Jamel, Edouard Baer, etc) worked on the same tv-channel and have the same kind of humor based mostly on deliberatly stupid puns (for example, the woman named "itineris", which is the name of a french phone operator, is the "voice of her people"), random sight gags, references or what I'd call "décalages" (a difference between what you expect and what actually happens). Lots of teenagers grew up watching those comedians and love them, so seeing them all in the same movie is wonderful.
I suppose you miss a lot if you don't speak french fluently and if you don't know the actors, since some of the jokes are based not only on the situations but also on the movies/things/bits those actors usually do.
As I said, it's really different from the kind of humor of the BDs. ome people may not enjoy it - I know for a fact that Uderzo didn't find the movie amusing at all, for example - but lots do find it hilarious.
Translation: I disagree. The movie isn't awful. When I compared the first Astérix with this one... No doubt, this one is the best. And it's more enjoyable than RRRrrrr... I really like Alain Chabat. He's got a special humor. At first, I thought I'd hate this film because of Jamel Debouz (Ok, I don't like this actor lol). But, compared to the first Astérix and the Comib book, the only awful thing was Jamel Debouz because he speaks too fast, even for French
Biggest mistake is to interupt the movie with nonsens, I.E. the scene that told us "this scene is to violent, as has been removed" insted of a fighting scene that where suposed to be there.
There where a few other things i dident like aswell, but nothing that would ruin the movie.
I love seeing asterix and obelix with real actors, however please dont ruin the movie with nonsens like interuptions doing playingtime.
I liked the movie, it really was fun, and I very much enjoyed the acting. It wasn't the greatest story ever, but still quite amusing.
For the French people here...please, this is an open, English based website. Speaking in a language not all of us understand is not very polite in my opinion. I do speak a bit of French, but not enough to read reviews like that. Especially not at 10.25 PM. I'm Dutch, but at the boards of the Dutch movies, we (or at least, most of us) speak English so that everyone can understand.
Just wanted to say that. If you don't agree with me, sorry, ignore this post but please be decent enough not to start cussing at me or calling me names. Thank you.
I'm not french myself, but even if I didn't get the in-jokes, I thought it was hilarious! I've seen it multiple times now, and I don't get bored by it.
And for that other poster that said, "Aussi, si j'ai envie de parler, ou écriver en français.... Je le ferai." Fine, you can write it in French, but maybe I'll choose to not bother to read it even though I can. (If you take this as a challenge, well then this conversation of you-versus-me and who's better or smarter could go on forever, if you don't make some arrogant argument such as a "No argument, it's me!")
But for the people that care to read the French posts but maybe don't know enough to understand the basic meanings, there are online translation site such as Babel Fish.
I speak French, I got all the jokes and I think it's a dreadful film. The humor is lousy and all the subtleties of the original work by Goscinny and Uderzo were lost.
I guess you just don't like Chabat's style. It's something straight out of French 80's comedy (cf la cite de la peur) Most of the jokes from the cartoon and comic so maybe it's just Asterix itself you don't like. Anyway It's really funny for me and a lot of people liked it so good for us we spent a nice tome watching it!
This is for my Canadian brothers. Do you know of anywhere in Canada where you cang get this film either dubbed or with subtitles. I also want to know where to get the animated films as well. I know this is off topic but answers would be apreciated.
Hmm...well it depends on where you live I guess.... Here (east coast) it can be found quite easily, but i suppose that if you live in rural Alberta it's another thing... Try Amazon, Archambault or HMV...you can order basically everything from those three
