Funniest Part

So yeah, we all appreciate how beautiful this film is as a drama and a love story, but one of the most wonderful things was the great comedic value, made even more awesome by good acting from the leads.

The part that had me laughing the most was when Alan's parents drop in for a surprise visit, and Alan's father starts asking about the book in a vague, accusatory way that makes Alan go into oh-no-I'm-being-outed panic mode.

Alan's Mom: "Your father wants to know when your book is coming out."
Alan: "Oh! The-b-th-b-th-buh-the-bu THE BOOK!"

It's the way that Larry Sullivan says it, in a staccato rapidfire, along with his expression that gets me. Hilarious!

Another great part was when Michael starts running after the hot shirtless guy at the park.

OH! And as awesome as the entire striptease scene was, the best part was when the bus drives past and there's a lady with a baby who has her hand over her mouth and her eyes are open SO WIDE. LMAO!

Too many good parts.

Other parts that were funny in the movie were the little projects that Beverly was working on. All of the things that she was "just starting" were all things that were/are really big today and in the 80s and 90s.

Allan pulls Tommy into a kiss. Tommy pulls away a bit dazed and utters "That's not gonna happen, because I hate you." before he pulls Allan into another kiss.

Tommy mocking Allan after they first make love, "Dude, I was so drunk I don't remember a thing." followed by that perfect break into the song "Behind closed doors."

Tommy's "I love dick." when Allan's parents are visiting.

I think the lovely thing about them is you could not get two characters who were more different from each other at the start and yet destined to be together.

Anyways, a real little gem of a movie.

The dinner party from hell that closes out the third act. It's fun to watch Peter be put in his place, especially in front of his stuffy parents, and it's heartfelt to see Mary be a supportive mother who wants to see the best for her son. In the lead up to Alan's parents' introduction, we're worried that they're unsympathetic jerks who'll be cross about any small thing in Alan's life. And that turns out to be partway true. What sells it is the warmth and pizazz that Jill St. John brings to her.
