Where does the name 'Drosophila' come from?

Does anyone know? I looked it up on Babynames.com, but they did not have it in their database. It looks very Greek to me.

I remember from my 10th-grade biology class that "Drosophila" means "dew-loving." The typical fruit fly used in genetics experiments is Drosophila melanogaster--i.e. black-bellied dew lover. The "dew" is more like "nectar"--liquid carbohydrates.

Thanks for the informative reply :)

I've wondered this myself, and whether the name is intended to imply anything about the character.

It's also the name of one of Cinderella's jealous step-sisters. I thought it was implying thusly

Hiya,
Drosophila is indeed a synonym for the fruit fly, as in Drosophila melanogaster, the "wine-lover"... no idea if this is important for the film - as in that the friend Drosophila likes to drink a lot, would make sense. I haven't seen t he film yet, but am toying with the idea. The only thing keeping me from watching it is that I will sooooo never get over my KU crush if I do, so still contemplating.
Also, Drosophila's are an important tool in science, but I am not getting further into this here ;)
