Was Billy’s friend gay?

I know he said he wasn’t when he put his hands around him, but then towards the end of the scene he said to Billy “you won’t tell anyone will you”. Was that referring to him being gay?

reply

He was very clearly gay, and he said he wasn't simply because it's not socially acceptable. He was lying, and Billy knew he was lying, and he knew that Billy knew that he was lying. "You won't tell anyone, will you?" was his way of acknowledging that he lied, showing that he trusted Billy enough to know the truth - and yes, it was referring to him being gay.

You did see that right after he says this he kisses Billy, right? LOL Yeah, it was on the cheek, but that was an 11-year-old's way of telling his best friend he's in love with him. So, yeah, Michael was definitely gay.

Sorry yes, that's the scene in question.

Yes! He appears again in the final scene talking with Billy's father (or brother, i can't remember)played by other actor (the character is an adult in that scene)

Prostitute: What the *beep* are you doing?
Johnny: I'm gonna kill a bunch of people.

He looks pretty gay in the final scene when he's in the audience to watch Billy. Looks like he's dating too. I have lousy gaydar but that's what it looks like to me, fwiw.

Billys friend in the final scene is basically in drag. Does he need to set a flare off in the theater to show hes more gay than that?

reply

He didn't deny he was gay when Billy asked, though. All he said was "What gave you that impression?" It was also a test to see how Billy would react. He looked a little relieved when Billy didn't hit him in the face like most guys would do.

What puzzles me about Billy's friend, Michael is, in the film, he LOOKS every bit of 11 or 12, but, I checked the actor who played him's date of birth, and it says 1982. Which, if Billy Elliot is from 2000, (and the film was SHOT in 1999), that would make him 17! The YOUNGEST looking 17 y.o I EVER saw.....puzzled.

Why? I have a son who is 32 and gets mistaken for someone 10 years younger. I was well into my 20's and married when I was asked for ID in a pub. And thrown out, because I didn't have any on me.

Yeah. Duh!
