I was so disappointed when I learned that throughout the UK and many other areas of the world "fanny" was slang for vagina, not butt, as it is in America. I thought that scene was so funny and cute and almost innocent when I thought she was talking about showing him her butt, which might have been pretty racy for a couple of innocent adolescents. Still a cute scene, but not as funny as what I was "picturing."

I suspect for most Americans this is a movie about ballet but in UK it's about how the north basically become an occupied territory and how the torries used the police as their private military to assault unarmed civilians and keep the north down. To add insult to injury when thatcher died we had to pay for her funeral dispite protests in northern england, wales, Scotland and Ireland but at least we got 'ding dong the witch is dead' to number 1.

Liverpool, chill. Who said anything about being offended? (I even said I still thought it was a cute scene.) I just thought she was offering to show her butt because, yes, we "yanks" use "fanny" to refer to the butt. Geez, don't make such a big deal out of it!

Maybe "disappointed" isn't quite the right word, but I was a little...um...ummm...hell, "disappointed" is all I got. Not disappointed at the use of the word, but at the image; I thought it was a bit cuter when I assumed she/they thought seeing her butt might cheer him up because it was a little "naughty," because that's exactly what young kids might think, though maybe not in this day and age.

I think I might have found it more amusing if it had been the way Jack_North had first thought,that she meant her bum/butt.
I was a child/teenager in the 80's and I come from what I suppose would be considered quite a rough town on the outskirts of Glasgow. I don't know any little girl who would have spoken like that. It just made me cringe to be honest.
