I agree with that sentiment.
For me the best Indian director though the persons frequenting the Indian Cinema board will not agree. For me on par with my other favourite directors Kubrick, Kurosawa, and Aronofsky. I have a penchant for spectacular cinematography and larger-than-life or mythical stories and a dislike for the "cool" crime & action films so much in vogue with young males . For me Santosh Sivan is better than the revered Satyajit Ray of Apu-fame.

Because I like Santosh Sivan's films better than Satyajit Ray's.
