I'm ashamed to say I hadn't even heard of the work of Bela Tarr until reading Ebert's essay on Werckmeister Harmonies (2000) a week or so ago... Now I can't wait to see at least one of his films!

Tarr's work, i think, Is some of the best in the world. I think that he is liekly the most important contemporary filmmaker.

If you can check out some of his work, I highly suggest it. Be prepared for your patience to be tried. Don't fight it, just let it take you in. You have to forget time when watching one of Tarr's films.

No kidding?! Generally I think Roger Ebert is a doofus. But maybe there's hope for him :D

Amen, that!

Roger has made some, lets say questionable postive reviews to certain movies, and seems to be getting softer with age, but the guy knows his stuff and when it comes to great movies, typically has impecable taste and knowledge.
I never suspected to see werckmeister harmonies to pop up on his site though. I've loved this movie for years and was shocked and thrilled to see it on his site.

I might contact Roger and ask him if he's had the chance to see anymore Tarr, since he declared he wanted to.
