Horror Genre?

I was told this was an amazing film, and I plan to see it. My question is, though, what level of horror does the film depict? I keep reading barbarianism in the descriptions. Any other horror films I can compare it to, or is it more of a psychological horror or a bizarre horror, like Eraserhead.

It doesn't fit the horror genre well. Jaws, Silence of the Lambs, Se7en, and the Sixth Sense fit the horror genre better. Yet, they aren't considered horror
on IMDb.

The character of the Prince probably qualifies this film as horror in some viewers' eyes.

reply

They're all considered horror films.

In my opinion, this movie is not a horror movie in any way. I actually didn't notice IMDB tagged it as horror until this thread. There is a scene in this movie that one could describe as barbarianism, but I find that it is the ultimate dramatic moment of the movie.

And it really isn't comparable to any horror movie for this exact reason.

reply

If imdb tagged it "horror" based on that riot scene, they'd also have to tag "Lord of the Flies", "Donnie Brasco" ...and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" (those kids were brutal storming the castle).

reply

Lord of the Flies was kind of horrific.

Haven't seen Donnie Brasco.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang did have that pedophile serial killer that was trying to capture and kill the children.

reply

I was thinking more along the lines of a riot scene, but now that you mention it that pedo creep really gave me the willies. A lot like the weirdo in Willie Wonka. What's the deal with child molesters in kiddie flicks anyway?

reply

I don't know - the scene with the Police Chief's kids was pretty horrifying.

If this was classified as Horror then Benny Hill should classify as the best Villian of all time.

Not even close to a Horror.

It's haunting, but not to the point of being labeled as horror.

reply

Yeah, unless you see philosophical allegories as horror, this film doesn't qualify for the horror genre. This film is a deep existential observation, but if you're open for it you will indeed be horrified... :)

Let me first point out that this 'artsy' film is not for everybody. Quite frankly, it is rather slow. Most action scenes are nothing more than different perspectives of people walking, marching or running in silence. And, it is not until halfway through the film before the story actually becomes intriguing. The film does reach an exciting climax when a mob of angry citizens ransacks a hospital. However, the word frightening doesn't seem appropriate to any fan of horror flicks. Melancholy would best describe the overall tone. Moreover, the story may even be a little bit humorous to some.

Case in point, the eccentric old man who notices that one of the keys on his piano is out of tune. He could have just called the piano tuner, but instead he rambles on about octaves and the ratio of black and white keys on a piano. This of course, all ties in with a disruption of the natural harmonic balance between the forces of Good and Evil. And, therefore, it is obvious why a guy who devised a flawed system of tuning organs, Werckmeister, was to blame for the woes of humanity.

I consider this film a drama with political, social, and metaphysical overtones.
